Subscribers only but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere if you're interested. Basically the current proposal is that if you want to stay in the country you wait 10 years and pay a "substantial" fine.

I used to be a McCain supporter but then I remembered he picked Palin as his running mate. :-P

Edit: I don't disagree a "fine" is reasonable. But.. will the people who have to pay the fine think so? Will they do it? Will it just lead to more folks not pursuing citizenship? I think 'yes' to all these things. I think it's within American's best interest that folks be nationalized if they are gonna stay here (and that's pretty much the case) so efforts should be made to nationalize them - not deter them. But.. that's just my HO on an already off-topic post.

Sounds like a great plan! Business wins, immigrants win, and the budget wins. I love good ideas where everyone benefits and nobody is hurt.

Except, of course, to the degree that it creates incentives for others to enter illegally.

Everything we do to make the lives of those who've entered illegally less miserable encourages more to enter illegally. And that's simply not a wise or just thing to do.

We need to fix our border security, and we need to fix our legal immigration system. We need those who want to come here to want to come here legally, rather than illegally.

And deals like this one simply make the problem worse.

If there is no need to enter illegally, why would anyone try it illegally? Just for the challenge?

Not to mention that 60% of people illegally in the states got here *legally*.

More than anyone, this man needs to retire. The joke that is coming out of the immigration leaks is just proof he's lost his mind.

One of our best senators ever. Guy's a war hero! Nice and moderate too. We need more senators like him, not less.

How you don't get trolling warnings, ill never understand. This statement is simply sickening.

Telling the truth isn't trolling. You may disagree, but I've always been a huge McCain fan.

Frankly, your post *is* trolling though. I think you should learn what trolling is before you start labeling things.

If you'll notice, I didn't start the immigration comments. I just went where the thread took us.

I'm not the troll here.

Perhaps not, but you engaged and there we go. Maybe try ignoring off thread posts in the future?

Not at all, I don't mind. But can we at least stay on topic? I clicked on this thread titled "filibuster on gun bill" and it turned into an immigration debate. If Heffay wants to debate immigration, fine...start another thread.
