If you'd said "we can stop these bills", I'd have agreed with you. But you said "they won't pass", which to my ears sounded too much like "we don't have to do anything". And if we had done nothing, they would have passed.

Guess Hefay was/is wrong. A gun bill WAS passed. This is why we can't stop our activism. Even thoug they said nothing would be passed this year here we are today learning something was.
