Like any lock, It's meant to keep the unprepared crook 'honest'..

"THAT" box looks like an invitation to any "minimally" prepared wanna be crook :?

If one left it in sight, you might well deserve to lose it. Mine is cabled to a seat post, under a seat.
Out of sight, out of mind.

On the cheap metal lock boxes and cables -- I'll find the picture but we did a test on one cabled to a seat strut. The length of the cable seems to be the deciding factor.

Bottom line (as stated previously) - they'll deter the smash and grab thief, but if you leave too much slack in the cable and they're able to really give the box a good yank, it will typically pull the cable right out of the side. They can then open the box at their leisure somewhere else. Better than nothing...
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

The purpose of having a lock box in the car is to prevent a smash-and-grab. If the box is strong enough to make it easier to steal the car than to break open the box, it's as strong as it needs to be.

I've never had a console in any car I've owned. But then, I've mostly owned compacts with manual transmissions.

I have a simplex-locked, front-opening lock box, bolted under the drivers seat. (I had a car audio shop install it).

Unfortunately, the model seems to be off the market. What I'll do for my next car, I don't know.

You mean like this?

This is a V-Line but the same as a Simplex. They are no longer made, but I do have 2 to get me by.

A lot of money, but there is this company.

The make custom fit for several models of cars and trucks, even one for motorcycles.

I have one mounted in the saddlebag of my bike.

They look pretty decent.

I have one in my Yukon. It seems very sturdy and is nicely out of sight.

For my car, I have one of those nano-vault boxes on a cable being derided here.

In regards to the original topic of this post.. I think the state attorney general in Illinois requested an extension.. has anyone seen news that it was granted or denied?

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-06-0 ... aw-1-.html

"Illinois Governor Pat Quinn gained a 30-day extension of a court-imposed deadline for signing into law legislation legalizing the concealed carrying of handguns before a state law banning the practice is permanently blocked."

"Today it granted Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request for additional time to let Quinn, a Democrat, study a measure passed by lawmakers on May 31."
