Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus

If this has been mentioned before, I missed it.

Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is a grassroots organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. We believe that law-abiding citizens should be able to own and use firearms for all lawful purposes, including self-defense, competition, hunting, and the shooting sports.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is organized as a Minnesota non-profit organization. In December 2015, we were recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(4) social welfare non-profit organization.

I got the email and read it a couple of times. I'm still not sure I understand the exact differences and functions of the three related organizations.

I think that the 501 C4 gives them more wiggle room in the lobbying world.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is a direct offshoot of the Minnesota Gun Owners Political Action Committee.

Same leadership, same board of directors, same group of advisors.

Rob Doar and I go into some detail about the context and reason for the organizations in this edition of our podcast, the Minnesota Gun Report.

http://www.mngunreport.com/episode-7-th ... ouncement/

But in short:
- PAC: Electioneering activities (vote for, vote against, we endorse, and similar direct and independent expenditures)
- Caucus: Advocacy, Education, Legal Action, Outreach, Legislation/Lobbying, some election/political activities such as grading, etc.

Learn more about the MN Gun Owners Caucus at http://gunowners.mn (mission and focus areas at the bottom of main page), or on our About page at http://www.gunowners.mn/about

We are not directly affiliated with any other organizations.

Rob or I would be happy to answer any questions here as well
Thanks,
Bryan

Same people - natural expansion of advocacy.

We're getting stronger here in MN - it's a good time to expand the groups!
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

OK. I guess I'll just come out and ask...

What does this mean for GOCRA?

GOCRA will continue to exist in it's own right, and can serve a valuable purpose.

That said, the Caucus allows a new direction, with a year-round presence. Not just during the legislative session.

I'm looking forward to seeing a stronger focus on education, and outreach to hunters who do not necessarily follow gun politics. I think the future is bright for a broad spectrum of groups here in MN.

I think this is a great development. I would like to see more year-round action and events. While lobbying and fund-raising and endorsements are critical, ultimately our success in strengthening and keeping our rights is cultivating a large base of knowledgeable, responsible, and active gun owners who can help create a culture in our state that is supportive of gun rights.

^^ Hear hear.

We're working on a lot related to education and outreach and hope to announce those plans in the near future.

We'd love your help -- here's the volunteer signup page if you're interested -- http://gunowners.mn/volunteer

So, given limited funds, what group would be the preferred recipient for donations?

That is a very good question, and i believe it is up to each person to make that decision. I see each of the organizations as having slightly different focal point. Because each person has a different eye on how we proceed going forward, I think it is an opportunity to literally put our money where our mouths are.

Just as important to all of the in-state organizations, is volunteer time! Personally, i am blessed with a little more time than money, and I will keep doing my best to show up as a volunteer for all three of the real pro-gun groups here in MN.

I've come to the conclusion that I get the most out of my donation buck by local groups. While there are a number of national organizations that do great work for gun rights, I'm only a member of the NRA and at a basic membership level for now. If I had more money I would give more, but since I don't I would rather given most of what little I have to give to groups that are working on getting stand-your-ground laws and constitutional carry enacted in our state.

I just had a nasty thought: If we get a Hillary regime administration, could they go after gun advocacy's tax exempt status?
