Reuniting The United States With Reciprocity
Most concealed-carry permit holders understand the potential pitfalls of traveling with a firearm, given the outrageous patchwork of state laws involved in even a short interstate trip. And while we haven’t posted much about reciprocity of late, important national concealed-carry reciprocity legislation is still in play and needs your help now to gain passage.

According to a recent update from NRA-ILA, U.S. Rep. Rob Goodlatte, R-Va., who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has signed on as a co-sponsor for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. H.R. 38 now has 212 co-sponsors, and according to NRA-ILA, its prospects in the House are looking better each week.

Of course, you wouldn’t know that from reading or listening to the so-called “mainstream” media, who have declared the measure a danger to the nation. And you wouldn’t know it from Michael Bloomberg and his gun-ban minions, who have recently proclaimed victory and declared the measure dead.

I can't see anti states like California, New York or Maryland accepting it: almost certainly it would be appealed all the way to the SCOTUS, which despite Heller and McDonald has been extraordinarily reluctant to strike down any but the most egregious gun bans. The antis would claim that it more or less nullified state gun control laws (true enough).

But it doesn't, you are still subjected to the states gun laws, they just have to accepts all other states permits like they have to accept every other states drivers licenses.

This is really only going to help in places that were already OK. No way in heck I'd try to memorize all the intricacies of some REALLY restrictive state's laws. Just asking for trouble.

"Sure, your permit is good, but your hollow point ammo and 15 round mag makes you a felon."

If that were the case, you'd have 2 different sets of laws. One for residents and another for non-resident permit holders.

If this bill were to pass, and I don't think it will, it will be declared un-Constitutional in about 10 minutes.

On the other hand, it would be fun to watch the most liberal jurists and their allies magically turning into "states rights" advocates.

If all the states adhered to the Constitution, then we would not need carry permits, ever.

The Strib "Editorial Board" just cut and pasted a screed from "Protect Minnesota". It's the usual sky is falling drivel....

In a jurisdiction like NYC for example, one rule for the non-politically connected, ie the un-washed masses. Another for non-resident permit holders.

Another example might a resident of a Constitutional carry state, who doesn't need a permit, in a jurisdiction which requires a permit like Minnesota.

Gotta love this quote from the article:
Twelve states currently have unrestricted concealed-carry laws. Just about anyone in those states, regardless of mental health status and criminal background, can pack a pistol.

Yeah, regardless of the things that might make a person FEDERALLY PROHIBITED from possessing a firearm, sure, ANYONE can carry. :p
