Safe Storage Law 2024

Postby daleamn on Wed Apr 10, 2024 7:23 am

Here's a link to a story about the Minnesota Safe Storage Law (April 4, 2024):

https://www.twincities.com/2024/04/04/m ... s-session/

I'm of two minds about the Safe Storage Law where you could be convicted of a felony if your guns are not locked up. Seems like it would just be 'common sense' to amend the bill to include the following items too. You know, for the children.

Tikki Torch Oil
Prescription Drugs
Non-Prescription Drugs
Fireworks
Tide Pods
Spray Paint
Propane Cylinders
Gasoline
Matches/Lighters
Razor Blades
Anything Poisonous
Glue
All Aerosol Cans
Knives
Car Keys
All Power Tools that cut or bore

Wouldn't things be much better if everybody, everywhere, under the penalty of law, had to keep these things locked up?

...don't forget to add water to the list. If you let someone drink to much water they will die too :o

Good God. A felony if you don't secure your guns? Meanwhile we let convicted felons out without bail for possessing firearms.

It gets less desirable every day to stay in this God forsaken state.
I will never apologize for being an American.

Starts as a misdemeanor, but depends on what happens and who is present.

Current version of the bill here:

We believe the DFL has the votes to pass this - it may yet get amended further. Expect floor movement in next 2-3 weeks.

OMG YES!!! Dihydrogen Monoxide!!! (H2O).

https://manoa.hawaii.edu/exploringourfl ... g%20agents.

https://www.dhmo.org/

Roughly TEN TIMES the number of deaths due to exposure to dihydrogen monoxide (about 4,000) than to rifles of ALL TYPES (about 364).

2019 USA Homicides using rifles (of all types including 'assault rifles')---364
https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/20 ... ble-11.xls

Deaths due to Dihydrogen Monoxide (CDC figures)
Every year in the United States there are over 4,000* [deaths related to Dihydrogen Monoxide].

More children ages 1-4 die from [exposure to Dihydrogen Monoxide] than any other cause of death and it’s the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5-14.

I also think our 'Red Flag' laws, pardon me the 'Extreme Risk Protection Orders' (ERPO) laws that take guns away from people "when they are at risk of harming themselves or someone else" should be amended to include removing ALL of the above items from the individual too.

After all, "they are at risk of harming themselves or someone else" so shouldn't we take these precautions too?

Are they trying to squeeze in an inspection clause, either explicitly or by interpretation?

I would think that would be hard to do, since they don’t “know” who has what guns. Thankfully we’re not Illinois (yet) and have a FOID type card requirement.

Think they tried that a few years ago and sheriffs stated they didn’t have the manpower to do this and thought it was wrong.

We tried this in the House & Senate in committee and on the floor and have roll call votes of the DFL voting against those amendments.

This came up in 2013 post-Sandy Hook with then-Rep. Alice Hausman's "assault weapons" ban bill - they wanted an annual inspection for storage by the Sheriff for you to keep the rifles.

I think this might be in John Marty's bill as well this year.
