Ilhan Omar on guns (urgh)

Postby Lumpy on Wed May 21, 2025 4:25 pm

I always sign the petitions emailed out by GOA and MNGOC to add my voice, even though living as I do in the bluest of districts it may not amount to much. Occasionally the offices in question respond with an auto-reply. Today I heard back from Ilhan Omar's office, and, well it's not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Quoted below for posterity.

Dear Mr. Hutson,

Thank you for contacting me to express your views on the gun violence epidemic in our country. I am honored to have the opportunity to bring the voices of the people of Minnesota’s 5th district to Washington and to fight for our shared values – values that put people at the center of our democracy.

Republican leadership, beholden to the NRA, has been stuck in a grisly ritual: mass shooting, moment of silence, inaction. Past sessions of Congress not only failed to respond to Aurora, Orlando, Newtown, San Bernardino, and Las Vegas, but they also ignored the daily reports of gun deaths at the hands of domestic abuse, homicide, and suicide. Every death is an ugly reminder of the toll that firearms take on our society and the price of inaction—more than 30,000 deaths a year from gun violence is a calamity.

In Congress, I am proud to have joined many of my colleagues in cosponsoring the Bipartisan Background Checks Act. This bill would finally close the gun show loophole by requiring a background check for everyone purchasing a firearm. Firearms simply should not be in the hands of dangerous people, and that is why a large majority of Americans support universal background check legislation.

While universal background checks are an important first step, it is not the last. That is why I was proud to also be an original cosponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban, which would ban the buying, selling, and possession of a semiautomatic assault weapon. The common thread between the majority of the biggest mass shootings in this country is the use of an AR-15 assault rifle, and that is what I voted to prevent when I helped the Assault Weapons Ban Act pass the House in the 117th Congress. This moment was possible because the American people said enough is enough. In pursuing practical legislation, Congress rightfully chose to stand with the courageous survivors, advocates, and the many Americans who all agree that we need common-sense reforms.

But loopholes in our nation’s gun laws still put people at risk of facing gun violence from prohibited weapons, like machine guns. In June 2024, the Supreme Court struck down a law to ban bump stocks, or add-ons that materially increase the rate of fire of semiautomatic weapons and approximates the action or rate of fire of a machine gun. I am a proud cosponsor of the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act, which would end this firearm loophole and continue to keep millions of Americans safe from harm.

Since being elected to Congress, I have made gun safety one of my top priorities. We need to prevent convicted abusers from accessing firearms, ban assault weapons, remove the federal ban on researching the impact of gun violence in our communities, and support the funding of mental health services. Please know that I will continue to champion common sense gun violence prevention legislation, and I will keep your thoughts in mind should regarding additional legislation related to this matter come before the House.

Thank you again for taking the time to reach out to me. Please do not hesitate to contact me or my office whenever we can be of service. I highly encourage you to subscribe to our newsletter to keep well-informed of the good trouble I am stirring up in the People’s Congress: omar.house.gov/contact/newsletter.

Sincerely,

Ilhan Omar
Member of Congress

Democratic boiler plate response. She can’t see that her birth country disarmed it’s populace and the result was what we see of that country today. Warlords controlling there miniature kingdoms. Kinda like what the Minneapolis city council is still attempting to do.

“…. Closing the Bump Stock Loophole ….”

That’s a new one….

With a modicum of patience, one could train a parrot to be a democrat.

Because it’s good to be king, or warlord….or city council person with private security.
