Minnesota: Another Gun Registration Bill Introduced in the Senate this time...last time was the house

Friday, March 13, 2009

On Thursday March 5, State Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon (DFL-7) introduced Senate File 1165, in yet another attempt to end private firearm transfers in Minnesota. SF 1165 is the companion bill to House File 953, previously introduced by State Representative Michael Paymar (DFL-64B).

SF 1165, like HF 953, was designed to not only regulate the sale of firearms at gun shows, but to regulate the sale of firearms between all law-abiding persons, all across Minnesota. SF 1165 only affects law-abiding gun owners, and will in no way keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Also contained in SF 1165, is a de facto registration system created by requiring the records of all transfers to be maintained by the state, which would be made available to all authorities, including for use in “civil” cases. SF 1165 would also remove the permit holder exemption from a background check and even increase the waiting period from five to seven days.

SF 1165 is a direct attack on Minnesotans’ Second Amendment rights and needs to be stopped! Please contact the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and respectfully urge them to oppose this divisive bill. Their contact information can be found below.

I contacted all of them by email last week but haven't heard from any of them yet.

That one didn't work Widge. Here tis: https://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/bin/bldbill.php?bill=S1165.0.html&session=ls86

What is the point of this legislation? Stopping crime? Why are they working at restricting sales at gun shows? Is there some outstanding evidence that criminals are purchasing guns at these shows? Is there evidence that criminals are getting guns from private sales?

From GunFacts.info (please support Guy Smith - he is doing a great job!)

Myth: Gun shows are supermarkets for criminals

Fact: Only 0.7% of convicts bought their firearms at gun shows. 39.2% obtained them from illegal street dealers.86

Fact: Less than 1% of “crime guns” were obtained at gun shows. This is a reduction from a 1997 study that found 1.7% - 2% of guns used in criminal offenses were purchased at gun shows.

Fact: The FBI concluded in one study that no firearms acquired at gun shows were used to kill cops. “In contrast to media myth, none of the firearms in the study were obtained from gun shows.”

Fact: Only 5% of metropolitan police departments believe gun shows are a problem.

Fact: Only 3.5% of youthful offenders reported that they obtained their last handgun at a gun show.

Fact: 93% of guns used in crimes are obtained illegally (i.e., not at gun stores or gun shows).

Fact: At most, 14% of all firearms traced in investigations were purchased at gun shows. But this includes all firearms that the police traced, regardless of if they were used in crimes or not, which overstates the acquisition rate.

Fact: Gun dealers are federally licensed. They are bound to stringent rules for sales that apply equally whether they are dealing from a storefront or a gun show.

Fact: Most crime guns are either bought off the street from illegal sources (39.2%) or through family members or friends (39.6%).95Myth: 25-50% of the vendors at most gun shows are “unlicensed dealers”

Fact: There is no such thing as an “unlicensed dealer,” except for people who buy and sell antique – curio – firearms as a hobby.

See the website for supporting citations.

Last week, I walked into my favorite gun shop and asked, “ Can I get those RPG’S, hand grenades and class III firearms that the media and anti-gunners say we can get at a American gun shop?” Everybody broke out laughing!

Sometimes I do wonder about these stats that are quoted in the media about the gun industry and crime. They say that “so many guns are traced back to dealers” All guns are traced back to the dealer by the ATF. It could be that the person that originally bought the gun from the dealer was a normal gun owner. Then along the way it was stolen from this guy and got into the black market. You know as well as I do that most of the guns that are used in crimes are coming from the black market. Here in MN, there have been cases where the crook could not buy the firearm, so they send in family or friend to purchase a firearm…straw man. A gun store that I know of, called in that a number of people were buying many more than one handgun and it turned out to be gang related.

Here is an article that is full of false statements, they sometimes print this stuff knowing that a lot of people don’t know that much about firearms.

The NRA does have a new page on the “gun show” and Mexico issue…great info
