Aside from the feebleness of mind that aparantly accompanied his advanced years, I think the last part of the above quote pretty much explains his decision. I mean, really? Dominated by conservatives? The party's lurch to the left has cost it more votes than it's gained. Neither of the last two Republican Presidents were all that conservative and their most recent candidate was even further left. Why is this guy even in the game anymore? It'll be interesting to see if his calculated strategy pays off.In an announcement that shocked colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Specter said he had become increasingly uncomfortable as a moderate in a party dominated by conservatives and would join the Democrats. That's not a winning strategy, but if that's what the GOP wants to be, it's up to them.
