college paper, gun control.

So my daughter has to do a paper on a controversial subject of her choice for college. She chose to do it on gun control/pro second amendment. I told her I would help her with it by getting some facts, statistics, articles, etc... I have a good selection of them but I'd rather she sees a bunch of examples for herself, and let her decide what she wants to include in her paper.

So if you know of any good websites, videos, stats, charts, articles, facts, etc... and their sources, or any other tips or bits of information you think might be good to include, please post them up and I'll let her look at them. She goes to St. Catherine's college in MN which is an all women's college. From hearing some of the things her professors say, I think they're a pretty liberal college so I'm proud of her for choosing this topic.

Of course she might have chosen it because her dad is an FFL, who carries at home in his PJ's, with a gun range in his backyard, and she knows I'll be able to help her with it more than a topic on say... Genetic cloning.
Thanks.

Gun FactsTM
Returning honesty to the gun control debate
Gun Facts™ debunks common myths about gun control. It is intended as a reference guide for journalists, politicians and anyone interested in learning about gun control facts and restoring honesty to the debate about guns, crime, and the Second Amendment.

The menu links above, and the free Gun Facts e-book (buttons on the right) provide over 100 pages of indexed information. Divided into chapters based on gun control topics (assault weapons, ballistic finger printing, firearm availability, etc.) makes finding information about gun control facts is quick and easy.

Each chapter lists common gun control myths, then lists a number of documented and cited facts (with over 560 detailed footnotes) from high quality, independent sources including government databases, peer reviewed studies, and more. Thus when a neighbor, pundit or politician repeats some sound bite about gun control policy, you can quickly find that myth then rebuke with accurate information.

Have her focus on the disproportionate ways that "gun control" laws affect people of color and the disenfranchised.

Feel free to message me. As a Liberal Democrat, I've got a lot of experience on this one.

Those are all good. I'll add -

The FBI crime stats website.
The CDC death stats website is probably the best source for actual data on what people die from. You can win a lot of debates by just quoting those numbers.
The Truth About Guns blog is a great resource, click on - facts about guns at the top of the page, this is a goldmine of info.
Bearing Arms is another great resource with lots of news stories about people defending themselves with firearms daily.

Another one, listening to Guntalk on radio or podcasts is excellent.

Tom Gresham is one of the best speakers on gun rights and you’ll find podcasts of his with John Lott and Alan Gura among others.

There was a bit in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in which our hero is teaching a freshman composition class and had assigned an essay on "America". A student approached him, claiming that she couldn't think of anything to write.

He told her to think smaller. Write something about Montana, or about Bozeman (where the college was). Write something about the Opera House, downtown. "Start with the upper left-hand brick".

It's an attitude I've kept in mind whenever I had to write a paper.

Pick a small topic, and use it to explore larger issues.

"Gun control" is far too large a topic. Any paper written on it will be trite and boring.

But the area is full of interesting smaller topics that could provide for a first-rate paper.

  • The Bellisle fraud
  • The growth of the shall-issue movement
  • The effect of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban on crime rates
  • ...

I'm sure the folks on this forum could offer more.

If they get free college I want refunds with interest on tuition I have paid!
