The Rifleman - The Anvil Chorus (12-17-1962)

Heard about this on 'Armed American Radio' 1280am

It's about the small western town where "The Rifleman" lives...The sheriff has to go out of town and the local non-leo that wears the badge for the sheriff while he's away...BANS ALL HANDGUNS IN THIS WILD WEST TOWN to make things simpler for himself for the week.

The bad guys take note of this and plan accordingly.

You can watch all 25 minutes of it in glorious black and white on YouTube.

Some of the dialogue is just a hoot...the episode could be called 'Guns Save Lives'

I was amazed at how anti-gun some of them older "westerns" are/were!

Saw one, where this "retired" gunfighter was being somewhat anonymous in this little town ... long story short, the town agrees to pretend he's dead ... they even bury a casket ... and he puts his guns inside!

The 'good-old-days' of TV weren't so good for the image of firearms. Look no further than wisdom filled Sheriff Andy Taylor who never carried a gun vs the frivolous 'one 'bullet' Barney Fife.
Of course this was the same lot that did one of hollywierd's first spin off's, which would scoff at the traditions of the Marine Corps - Gomer Pile

I've never watched Destry Rides Again with Jimmy Stewart because I can never get past this line: "Destry Rides Again is the story of a sheriff who doesn’t like to carry a gun."

Actually, it starred Audie Murphy.

Maybe we all yearn for a day when there is no more violent crime. Until then, I think a real sheriff should keep his pistol handy.
