Students with gun permits get segregated dorms at University of Colorado

"If you have a permit, you can carry a concealed weapon on campus, as long as its hidden away from view, and you can even have it with you in class," Huff told NBC News. "What you can not do is have it on you at a ticketed event, such as football games, or in any of the residence halls on campus."

[...]

University officials say both campuses will establish a residential area for students with permits but will ban guns in all other dormitories, according to the new policy.

Huff said those who live in residence halls will have to lock up their firearms with police, but can check out their weapon before and after they go to their residence hall. For those living in family housing units, he said, safes will be established and supervised by the housing monitor.

All in favor of this, but talk about keeping the sheepdogs separate from the sheep.
What I did not understand, and I hope someone could explain it to me, is the poll question at the end.
Sounds like no matter how you respond it could be taken as a negative

Ok, so the criminals will now know which dorms they can attack and not fear getting shot back at. No, that won't become a problem ever.

That totally works for me. Both sides are free to do what they see fit. Personally, I don't see people without carry permits as sheep that are too ignorant to get their own, nor myself as some sort of great protector of them.

Never meant for my analogy to convey this at all, my only concern is my family and myself.

Until, of course, some coed attracts a stalker, and decides she needs a gun.

How long do you suppose it'll take her to transfer to a dorm that won't force her to remain vulnerable?

Exactly. And she would have the freedom to make that choice. Win/win.

Still a better policy than the "oh so great" MNSCU board has put in place. Students and faculty are not allowed to carry on campus grounds regardless. BUT! Visitors are more than welcome to carry...I would never break such an important rule and conceal deeply!

One of the advantages of legally carrying concealed is that you can choose to quietly go about your business without having to explain your personal choices to anyone. This policy is forcing people to "out" themselves. Whether they want to or not. They don't have "straight" and "not straight" dorms. Neither are there "Republican" and "Liberal" dorms. Seems a little wrong to force someone to broadcast their personal beliefs.

I was listening to MPR the other day when they did a report on this story.

The reporter said that, as of Monday, NO PERMITTED students had applied to live in the dorm. I'll see if I can find a link..

-EDIT-

That was a quick search.

I would have been been happy if they just would have divided it between real degrees and BA's
