Peace rally at State Capital and other ways to help.

Postby driztan on Tue Jan 08, 2013 3:04 pm

I am sorry I know this is a dupe, but I got sick of looking for the OP. On such an important issue I'm sure no one will really mind it being a dupe. Also I am not a facebook user so I am unable to access the page dedicated to this peace rally for all 50 states.

Feb 8th, 10 EST 2013 (I want to know if some leadership has set a CST directly for the rally to begin.)

Reason I am posting is, has anyone confirmed there has been a permit applied for and granted for this rally. I am about to start working on this right now, just wanted to make sure it hasn't been done already. Also, I ask please start spreading the news that we are trying to unite as brothers and sisters of America and defend our constitutional rights.

First and foremost I am looking out for Minnesota. If possible I would like to help out other states to ensure that they successfully have the proper permits. We don't want our brothers and sisters in arms to be arrested for standing up in what they believe in.

If you consumers of this site could fill up this thread with helpful information your effects are greatly needed! "United we stand, divided we fall."

Thanks all!

My personal feeling is not to take this effort too seriously:
A cold Friday is not going to draw a big crowd. And this is all about turning out numbers.
The capitol grounds permit is an issue that I have not heard having been addressed.

I fully understand your feeling and opinion on the matter. I also agree, I don't expect a large turn out myself. But I have to do something, sitting back idle has never my style. Even if I am the only one there freezing my bum off, I know I will be able to find peace in my slumbers that night a little easier.

Ive done the emails
Ive posted my opinions
Ive donated money to many organizations

What else can I do? I am a motivated resourceful person looking to devote my time and efforts to what I believe is the most important issue with our nation right now. I have choose to make my stand to prevent the infringement of the 2nd, but really my goal is to continue to educate myself and defend/protect all of our constitutional rights.

I am going to work on getting the permit taken care of, I will update this thread when I am assured that is fully completed.

Thanks all.

Since you're taking on the organizing mantle - I'll draw your attention to this post by our very own plblark for some good info.

plbark wrote: I'll try to pass on some guidelines from successful events and activists:

1) Only ONE type of activism at a time.
Decide WHICH TYPE of activism for WHICH cause and ruthlessly eliminate any linkage to ANY other cause or group.
This keeps your supporters, opposition, those on the sideline, and most importantly YOU from getting confused about your motives and goals.*snip*

2) Communicate clearly and effectively
In essence what you're trying to do here is to normalize OC behavior.

What is your message? - It's no big deal folks, we're regular people doing something lawful.
Try to remove anything that would distract from the message or allow the opposition or audience to get sidetracked. It's not enough to be RIGHT, you have to be able to communicate it in a manner that people will leave better informed or with a better opinion of your cause. Simple, concise, well documented, calmly presented, Normalized, safe, rational, non-threatening. The more common sense you can present it the better.

What is your target audience?
You have several different layers and levels of people who will be taking this in:
The general public: Don't think about guns, generally believe the news and movies, are uncomfortable with people with guns. They often project their fears and motives onto you. Most of their experience with guns is incorrect or through examples of illegal behavior, not law abiding gun owners as good people.
Gun Owners: often mistake "shall not be infringed" as long as they can still hunt and don't get the bear arms part.
Permit holders: OC is a minority in the permit holder world. Most are discrete and choose to conceal. The Permit system is new enough to remember how we got here. It took a long time and careful planning to gain what we have without a lot of restrictions and bad legal language. You're making waves. Sometimes that leads to change and sometimes that change is good. That's not always the way to bet without careful consideration

3) Be the BEST example of the cause you can
This is mostly common sense and not giving the opposition any ammunition. You're probably the first OC group most people you meet have seen. Leave a good impression.

Cleanest
When doing activism: Dress more conservatively, put on clean crisp clothes. Pay attention to grooming: Do I need a haircut? Shower and shave right before heading out. etc... I'm not saying you're a slob. I'm saying that in any group, there's that one guy the rest would prefer had stayed home. Don't be the stereotype showing up in ratty and tattered camo clothes and the stars and bars.

Best informed
No matter who you interact with, you have to KNOW the facts, the law, and your message. Then you have to be able to CONSISTENTLY and CLEARLY communicate it. IT'S MY RIGHT is NOT effective communication. Tactical Timmy is NOT effective communication.

Most Polite
Those nice guys with an odd habit leaves a much different impression than those jerks who were right and "technically" legal.

Safest
Don't touch the guns. Murphy loves a practical joke and he has a sick sense of humor. Wear a comfortable stable holster on a good belt.
Retention holsters would be a good idea.
Be aware of your muzzle. Think how you bend and where the muzzle is pointing.Even gunnies who KNOW it's safe when holstered don't like to look down the muzzle. Shoulder holsters would be a BAD idea.

While it's essential for EVERYONE at the event to follow the guidelines above and to KNOW THEIR STUFF, The most successful events I've been to had "event Marshals" or "Point people" - those who are most on message and the best public face. These are the people who should wander over to monitor any public contact and especially any official interaction. You cannot afford to be confrontational but should know your stuff...

Oh, and the Capitol has its own carve out in the MN Carry laws...someone smarter than me will be along shortly with a link to info on that...
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Hey I just want to make sure I understand. I just heard about a national rally day on January 19th and then another Minnesota day on February 8th. Are you guys talking about moving forward with the February 8th date? My station (am 1280 the patriot) will start advertising on air and looking for other businesses to tie into this to spread the word.. With two dates floating around it becomes a bit confusing for what to start working on.

There's a group on Facebook, "Twin Cities Gun Owners and Carry Forum" that appears to be organizing one for January 19th...it would be nice if the two groups could get together and decide on a single day.

Just sayin'

As I understand it, both events are planned as nationwide; can't readily find a website for the 8 Feb event.

AM 1280 sounds like you have the leadership I was looking for. Since I am not a facebooks user I was going off 2nd hand information, which was frustrating to say the least. Any efforts I was going to put towards the Feb 8th IJ will direct to the Jan 19th event. I do not believe the facebooks Feb 8th event has any leadership at all, so don't bet on that date coming to fruition. So I say ignore the Feb 8th event for now. If you can move forward with getting the permit and advertising on the air you will be great service to your community!

Please let me know if I can help in anyway. I'll be tuning into your station for the first time this morning.

Thank you very much!

And please let us know when you have said permit.

I hope other states have the leadership and foresight to obtain required permits......

Thanks everyone for responding and giving me a bit more insight as to what is going on. I found a couple groups as well as the link that was posted above (thanks for that btw) of MN groups that are already moving forward with the February 8th date so we have already secured a permit for that now and our station (AM 1280 The Patriot) will be there from 10am to 2pm on the south steps of the Capital. If you have a conceal permit and wish to bring your gun with you make sure you have taken the right steps to do so as I would hate for this to become a negative event with people breaking the law unintentionally or intentionally alike.

As for the January 19th date, that is a support gun stores and ranges type day from what I can gather so we will not be moving forward with that one. Promotion for this event will start on our station next week!! I hope this is a great event and hope all of you will be there as I know me and my family will. :D
