A pretty telling article though I would love a sound byte of him saying "It is dead."

A gun bill that would require universal background checks has stalled in a key committee in the House.

After debating a bill to expand background checks to gun shows, private sales and online sales for nearly two hours Wednesday morning, the House Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee recessed until the evening to take a vote. But when it came time to reconvene, Democrats were absent from the hearing room for more than an hour while Republican members waited in their seats. Chairman Michael Paymar, the bill’s author, reconvened the committee only for a moment to lay over his bill instead of taking a vote.

After the hearing, Paymar told the Pioneer Press that his bill is dead, but he will try to push an alternate proposal that extends background checks to just gun shows.

...........

That wasn’t enough for Republican Rep. Tony Cornish, a retired peace officer who said the bill was “too horrible to make it out of committee.” At the start of the hearing, Cornish predicted all Republicans and two Democrats would vote against the bill. “This bill is a nightmare for gun owners.”

NRA lobbyist Chris Rager said he was upset Paymar chose to hold the vote on the bill in the evening, adding that he had heard Paymar planned to “wrangle” and “bully” Democrats to vote for his bill throughout the day. Paymar denied the accusation.

I can't resist either....cue the Munchkins!!!

Munchkins:
Ding Dong! The bill is dead. Which old bill? The Wicked bill!
Ding Dong! The Wicked bill is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked bill is dead. It's gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
The Wicked bill is dead!

Just back from the hearing, sounds like the gunshow loophole portion will reappear in another bill....perhaps Hilstroms ??

Senate bill and house bill need to match. Since they were companion bills if the Senate bill passes and a new bill from the house appears and passes then they have to go to a conference committee and get something that both house and senate can pass. One thing to keep in mind. Any new house bill needs to be written and passed in committee by Friday.

More news.

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/displa ... und-checks

Rep. Michael Paymar of St. Paul says he's switching to a plan that would expand background checks to sales at gun shows but not to private sales and transfers.

Paymar says he also plans to include many provisions from the alternate package of less-restrictive gun measures that would tighten the state's current background check system, add to the parameters of who cannot legally own a gun and help county attorneys crack down on illegal gun owners.

That bill was introduced earlier this month and is backed by the National Rifle Association.

Republicans and gun rights advocates say expanding background checks to gun show sales is a nonstarter for their members.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The House Democrat pushing for broader restrictions to Minnesota gun laws has abandoned imposing universal background checks for firearm sales.

The fight is not over - banning private sales at gun shows will emerge in a couple days.
