A quick interwebs search netted virtually nothing, except this:

http://www.nyfirearms.com/forums/firearms-news/58256-nypd-letter-rifles-shotguns-illegal-must-immediately-surrendered.html

Based on the dates of those posts, I'd say this letter has been circulating for a while…
"...the liberties of the American people were dependent upon the ballot-box, the jury-box, and the cartridge-box; that without these no class of people could live and flourish in this country..." ---Frederick Douglass

How about November 18th, since that's the date on the confiscation letter. ;)

I'll handle this. ;)

It is not, apparently.

a verified, current NYPD UMoS wrote:I called our good colleagues at the Rifle & Shotgun Section. They are well aware of the sh*tstorm this caused all over the web.

This letter was sent to ONE person...for reasons involving his specific permit. He then changed it a bit to make it look like something it wasn't, and posted it online.

Here is the genuine article, which was apparently modified and then published to incite outrage. Notice the usual hallmarks like the city seal, the letterhead, and the differences between it and the suspect letter.

Also, the NYC Admin. Code has to do with feeding devices, limits their capacity to 5 rounds, and does not completely ban long guns (NYC's absurd preoccupation with certain "assault weapons" not withstanding).
Check it out: N.Y. ADC. LAW § 10-306 : NY Code - Section 10-306

Bottom Line: NYC sucks, but it looks like they're off the hook for this one.
Tony Martin. It could happen to us.

The Washington Times is running with it without any indication that they attempted to verify the accuracy of the story.

A few more mentions in the mainstream media and we might actually see a confirmation or denial from NYC.

Don't know if this is the real deal yet or not. But still registration leads to confiscation.

The New York City Police Department is taking aim at owners of shotguns and rifles capable of holding more than five rounds, demanding such guns be surrendered, altered or taken out of the city.

The demand came in the form of some 500 letters mailed out to owners of registered long guns that are in violation of a 2010 city ordinance. The first option for the letter's recipient is to, "Immediately surrender your Rifle and/or Shotgun to your local police precinct, and notify this office of the invoice number. The firearm may be sold or permanently removed from the City of New York thereafter.
