The Democrats will beat up on Gorsuch for awhile, try to score some political points, then will vote to approve him. They'll want to save their ammunition for Trump's next Supreme Court nominee...someone likely to be even more conservative than Gorsuch. Even worse (for them), if Trump runs for and gets elected to a second term, he has the very real possibility of appointing four Supreme Court justices during his administration. If that happens, it will change America for generations.

Actually, just by the end of the first term, Ginsburg will be 87 and the second oldest SC judge ever. Kennedy would be 84. Both far beyond American's life expectancy and working years. The actuarial odds are they both don't continue after 4 years. Depending on the makeup of the senate, if the filibuster has been nuked and what transpires with those previously mentioned jurists, it's not impossible to think that Thomas could be convinced to retire as well. Considering the odds, it is more likely than not that Trump sits 3, perhaps 4 new justices. Which is why if it becomes necessary to use the nuclear option, now would be a historically opportune time. With the relatively recent sitting of judges, and these probable replacements, the chances are low that this could come back to hurt the republicans in the near future, which has always been the primary deterrent.

I guess it is a matter of interpretation, but I'd resist saying "change America for generations" and say instead "preserve America for generations". Basically it will steer the bus away from the ditch it was heading towards and keep America on the road it was on prior to the 0bummer administration's takeover. Yes, we might solidify gun rights more than they are, but there isn't much drastic to do other than preserve them (well, NFA and constitutional carry aside, but those aren't sea-change deviations). What else might change drastically? Not much compared to what would change under a liberally-weighted SC.
