In the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week, the debate about how our nation’s schools should be secured is once again in full swing. While President Trump is arguing for arming a percentage of the teachers, others say such notions are ludicrous. Many don’t believe civilians with guns ever stop mass shootings.
They are wrong. Civilians use firearms in defense of themselves and others every day. The shooting is Florida has been complicated by news that the campus resource officer, a sheriff’s deputy that was armed and in uniform, saw the shooter but didn’t follow him into the building during the shooting. He’s accused of being a coward, and proponents of tighter restrictions on guns are using his failure as a symbol of the failure of armed self defense.
