Trump vs Harley

Postby LarryFlew on Fri Jun 29, 2018 11:51 am

Up until recently I have had little or no problem with what the Donald has accomplished etc but the denigrating Harley thing is a bit over the top. Does he really expect them to pay 25% more for their metal purchases per his tariffs and then lose another 25% in tariffs selling in the UK? Basically shutting down the business and certainly losing a BUNCH of UK customers.

Not sure of how their mark-ups are but even if they are a HUGE 30% profit (not likely) they would still be screwed.

I'm not convinced he thought it all the way through and would bet that he was hoping for capitulation with the mere threat of tariffs.

Negotiations are about making your opponent believe the threats you are making, so if there are temporary losses while you build your "street cred" but the outcome is you get clout, you have to calculate whether it would be worth it. Key is to have a unified front - Harley is not providing that unified front - I wouldn't be surprised if they get a phone call or a visit asking to go along with the program until we get our way.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get another message here soon basically " ya well, we tried, it didn't work, so just kidding".

Even Trump knows there are better motorcycles. He’s just trying to MHG but they decided to whine instead.

Many years ago, you measured the horsepower in a Harley Engine, using a Richter Scale. I believe they still utilize this device

Then why is almost every mfgr. Making a Harley clone ?
Harley did say the plant in Thailand is not going to be selling to the US Market, they are only for European sales but it makes me wonder if the closing of the Kansas City plant wasn't to get machinery for their new plant abroad.
This brings me to wonder why can't we do a tit-for-tat on tariffs and let the other countries decide what tariffs they are willing to pay. The UK wants a 31% duty on Harley let them pay a 31% duty to bring any of their bikes into the us as well. Hasn't the US been holding the crappy end of the stick long enough.

Sorry, if HD is moving manufacturing overseas, they were planning on doing so long before tariffs were announced.

Any US manufacture, planning on moving their production overseas because of a tariff which might go away in 6 months, deserves to go bankrupt.
I will never apologize for being an American.

If you pay attention to the market, The bottom has been falling out of "cruiser" sales. This has been going on for several years and wasn't Trump's fault... it's demographics.

I've ridden two Harleys in my life...
