Dear Mr. X,
Thank you for contacting my office about the important issues of gun rights and gun violence.
As a gun owner, I understand the need to protect the constitutional right to bear arms. I also know there are common sense steps we can take to help ensure guns are used safely by law abiding citizens.
First, we must allow the Centers for Disease Control to conduct unbiased research into gun violence. Passage of the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act of 2019 will allow us to better understand the factors that contribute to gun violence, and we can create policies to mitigate those causes.
Next, the Senate must take up and pass H.R.8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, to close loopholes in our existing background check system so we are sure that criminals are not able to purchase weapons.
We also must prevent the sale of military style assault weapons, as well as bump stocks, which turn legal guns into fully automatic weapons of war.
I’m also working with representatives from both parties to solve issues faced by families across the 2nd Congressional district.
Health care remains my top priority, and I’ve already introduced a bill to lower premiums for hard working families. I’ve also joined several bills designed to reduce the astronomical cost of prescription drugs. A bipartisan measure I authored to help local communities maintain access to clean water just passed out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. That committee is also where I advocate for increased infrastructure investments in our highways, roads bridges and waterways throughout the second district. Additionally, I am fighting on a bi-partisan basis to make sure our education system is fully funded, including federal funds for special education, so our students have the resources they need to be successful.
I’ve been listening to farmers and greater Minnesotans across the district and have brought their concerns directly to the chairman of the Committee on Agriculture. And in the Committee on Small Business, I’m listening to owners and employees of small businesses to help level the playing field.
Thank you again for reaching out about the issue of gun rights and gun violence. To stay up to date on my work in Washington and the 2nd district, sign up for my newsletter here. Please don’t hesitate to contact my office about the issues important to you and your family, your input helps me better serve you.
Sincerely,
Angie Craig
