In the gun rights fight, don’t be a McNutt

Postby Hmac on Sat Apr 06, 2019 4:51 am

A passionate “gun rights activist” in Texas decided it would be a good idea to actually visit the homes of legislators that he perceived as stalling a Texas “constitutional carry” bill. Predictably, that turned out to be counterproductive.

That’s just nutty

While they should have shoved it through already, I don’t blame them. Setting precedent that people showing up to your house makes good policy isn’t a great idea.

Yeah, one gun rights supporter showing up at politician's doorstep is a nut.

200 lefties would have been a group of activists.

Hope his fellow gun enthusiasts visit his home to get his attention on how dumb that was. What a moron.

The behavior is stupid and unproductive, but I'm missing the details on why they consider this intimidation. Were there threats of violence or any sorts of aggressive behavior? Did he show up armed to the teeth, shouting, ranting and raving? Conversation about public policy can happen anywhere.

The killing of the bill was an overreaction and feels like a convenient excuse to abdicate the responsibility to hear the question. Having said that, I would have approached it differently and avoided the ham handed, overly emotional knee jerk antics.

Sounds like the speaker was an anti anyway and this was a convenient excuse. Making law based on one person would seem to be even dumber than what this guy did.

“If politicians like Speaker Dennis Bonnen think they can show up at the doorsteps of Second Amendment supporters and make promises to earn votes in the election season, they shouldn't be surprised when we show up in their neighborhoods to insist they simply keep their promises in the legislative session," he said.

He was overzealous for sure but his last statement says a lot - when the politicians can come to my house but I can't go to theirs. The ability for one person to stop legislative action on a whim is also just wrong.

That's my thinking, as well.
And like the chihuahua that sired a litter of pups with a St Bernard, you got to wonder who put him up to it.

I don't think "they" consider it intimidation. I think Rep Bonnen considered it intimidation as did the other Reps that this idiot tried to "persuade". Bonnen didn't have power over getting the bill advanced, it's a committee deal. But McNutt has certainly give them all cover for tanking it under the "I was stalked by a gun nut" clause.

I re-read the article and found this nugget.
Bonnen, a Republican, was in the state capital of Austin but his wife teenage sons were inside the home. He said McNutt's actions were a demonstration of "insanity" and called him an "overzealous advocate for criminals to get a gun."

It would seem the pro-gun speaker isn't as pro-gun as he led voters to believe.

Anti-Constitution and anti-freedom. He should probably be given a reason to pursue another line of work.
