The way referendum works in Switzerland is that after a law is passed, if citizens collect 50,000 signatures within 100 days of the law's official publication, the law is put on hold until a referendum is held.

If the law fails to gain a majority the law is repealed.

Constitutional amendments are subject to a mandatory referendum, and must gain a majority in a majority of the cantons to pass.
