You can chose from several different topo maps and you don't need cell service or data service to find your way in remote areas. You simply download a 50 square mile area you want to explore to your phone and you're set. I've used the included Canadian topo maps to find areas around my cabin I never knew were there. It also has marked portage routes from lake to lake. I simply navigate right to them. It is the best phone application I've ever used! There is a one time fee of only $9.99. There are several tutorials and forums on Backcountry Navigator to help get you started.

We recently went from a 4.3" older gen Garmin to the 1450LMT 5". That doesn't sound like much of difference in screen size, but it is quite noticeable, especially when you consider it is only about a $10-$15 price jump. The new unit has the Lane Assist or intersection view (whatever they call it) and is nice when traveling new routes in larger cities.

My dad has a Tom Tom with similar features and we have both come to the conclusion the Garmin is the better choice.

There's a pretty wide selection out there. My suggestion would be to go some place that has a selection and look to see which screen looks 'right' to you.

I'd also suggest getting a good paper map to stash in the glove box or trunk for emergencies. GPS technology has its limits. Also, take a gander around the forums and see if you car has a windshield that prevents the GPS from picking up satellites. My old Chevy minivan had one, and I had to buy an external antenna if I wanted to use the GPS.

Thanks everybody. My wife just wants it to navigate in the twin cities -

I am thinking we won't have to spend $200 on one - Great feedback

Thanks

I bought the gf a nuvi 1350LMT for her birthday last year - she uses it a lot, and says it's the best present I've ever given her. I got the nuvi 40LM for Christmas, and like it.

You could get a Lumia 900 with Nokia Drive.

He could also give her a bottle of soap and point to the kitchen. Both of which I wouldn't recommend.

I don't know about that. No matter what product you purchase, I'd like to hope it would be from a company that will be around in 12-18 months if there's a problem.

As for Nokia, the odds are about 40/60 when you lose 1.5 Billion per quarter. http://www.thestreet.com/story/11504279/1/nokia-oyj-stock-downgraded-nok.html?puc=TSMKTWATCH&cm_ven=TSMKTWATCH

Looks like buying anything but Nokia is the wise decision today.

Does that one come with the lifetime map updates? Those are really handy considering what the @#$* charge for updates. They'll even warn you if your map is older than one year on start-up.

Surprisingly, that makes a lot of sense once you pointed it out.
