AR Thermos Handle

Postby Leech on Wed Dec 23, 2009 2:55 pm

As promised.

I finally completed the AR handle for my gun show thermos. I could not locate a shot-out barrel so decided to make my own using the dimensions of a good one I acquired from a friend. To keep the center of gravity low, I turned a piece of 4” phenolic, rather than steel, to the same contour of an actual barrel and cut some 1/2 x 28 threads for an A-1 flash suppressor. A little black textured paint and it matched the receiver. Maybe I should make it really "bad" and paint the thermos black also. Yah I know, too much spare time but it is unique and will make a good conversation piece.

You know you are going to have people asking if you will make them one? You should have a couple extra ready to sell. And yes you need to paint the thermos black people will see you if you dont.

Paint the thermos to look like a gernade launcher or rotory mag. Then go carry it in downlown St Paul.

Nice idea.

I have a spare A2 carry handle I was just going to sell. Now I have a project idea. :cogitating:

Leech, are you going to have these available to purchase on your table at the Mankato gun show on March 6th and 7th? ;)

Cool.

Is that a forging or a completely finished upper?

You need one of these to go with it:

Hot damn, I love the mug and need to get one to go with the thermos. Thanks for the great tip.

Holly crap, I thought it was plastic. $279 and no carrying handle? Now I have another project to work on.

The upper is partially finished and was a booboo because of some milling errors or was used to set up a CNC mill. A gun show vendor had several on his table for $5 each and I just could not pass one up. At the time, I did not know how it would be used and now I wish I had purchased all of them.

A few years back, I purchased a Pachmayer revolver sample from Cobb and did not know how it would be used either but finally built it into a non gun.

I got bored a while back and whipped it up in Solidworks it's doable but 279 is a bargain if you have to pay for machining.

Gotta imagine machining on that bad boy would be crazy expensive. But a straight walled stainless mug probably could be easily disassembled (usually they have a plastic liner glued in). Holes could be drilled through the jacket, cheap picatinny rail blank can be purchased in various lenghts http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2670 ... RAIL_BLANK ,and drilled and tapped to match the mug jacket. Glue the liner back to the "improved" jacket, a little Duracoat, black buzz bomb, ect.. Just a thought

Edit: Just saw the website for the battle mug.

I would think they'd be better off casting them rather than turning out so much scrap in machining them. Not to mention the machine time and wear they're causing starting from rather expensive raw stock.

With the rails you linked, you'd still end up at $200 before having a mug. I didn't look in my catalog to see what the dealer price is, but it's still probably up there.

You'd do better to go to the ready-made stuff that has the holes drilled and costs about $10 a pop - it'd save ya 75%.

Too cute! Makes the perfect carry-on with the Tommy gun in the Violin case and the derringer belt buckle from The Wild Wild West. (oh, I left out the lit fuse in the shoe-heel in seat 30C !) If there were booze in the can, you could make the front page in the Communist Daily-Times in Minneapolis! Wait until Super-Soaker crusises this web site....get it patented now!!!!
