The blade comes out the end?

Benchmade Mini Infidel OTF Auto Knife 3350 - Like New

Bad ass blade. I guess I always thought an otf auto was illegal here. Nice it isn't!

Illegal to transfer or possess in Minnesota.

Doesn't say anything about OTF knives - but yes, since this is automatic it is arguably a misdemeanor to possess in MN.
That said:

US Code Title 15 Section 1241 wrote:The term “switchblade knife” means any knife having a blade which opens automatically—
(1) by hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle of the knife, or
(2) by operation of inertia, gravity, or both.

That's how I'd assume they're defining automatic knife, so arguably every knife that doesn't take two hands to open is a switchblade... YMMV, IANAL.

I thought it was OK to possess (like in my house) but not carry auto knives in MN? Does the OTF vs side opening matter?

"Button or other device in the handle". Would seem to exclude thumb studs or holes in the blade as would be typical of a one-handed folder.

So, you think MN law would distinguish between an automatic spring-loaded axis knife vs. an automatic spring-loaded OTF?

Hmmm...

Far be it from me to assume or think anything about the incredibly consistent and logical nature of MN statutes and laws

I did not say or imply that I thought it. By writing, "Does the OTF vs side opening matter?" I was asking if it matters or if there is a distinction in MN law. Question still stands.

Badger: as far as I can find there is no distinction.

Skeeter: the law listed above includes possession. That means owning it is not legal in MN, at least as far as I can tell.

Just wanted to add this comment...

MN Statutes 2012 wrote:609.66 DANGEROUS WEAPONS.

Exceptions.
Nothing in this section prohibits the possession of the articles mentioned by museums or collectors of art or for other lawful purposes of public exhibition.

So arguably if you're a museum or a "collector of art", or are owning one for "other lawful purposes of public exhibition" you're exempted.
What that means, I'm not sure.

Finally, according to the statute, transfer of a "switch blade knife opening automatically" is still illegal in MN.

Auto's are routinely sold at MWCA shows - right in front of the PD in St Paul a couple years back. They had some cop table set up right across from the qvc quality knife vendor.

Owning one as a collector is allowed. Carrying one is exempt for LEO, paramedics, FD, and military. More stupid "feel good" restrictions no one unlawful follows.
