The weapon you are thinking of is called a PR24. It's a completely different animal, very effective with proper training.
I've seen ASPs collapse using both jabs and strikes, including strikes in the manner ASP designed it for (using the tip of the baton as a "whip" is the best way I can describe the method). I've also seen them bend so much they could not be re-collapsed after use.
They aren't useless by a long shot, but they have some limitations that other impact weapons don't. I personally like the ST Action Pro Talon and the Cold Steel Sharkie. I also practice doing strikes with a folding knife, leaving the blade folded ("closed strikes").
