Loosening a fobus paddle for Glock?

Postby 45Badger on Sat Dec 25, 2010 1:53 pm

Jackson's little brother wants to join us for 2011 steel shoots. He's a lefty, right eye dominate, with impaired fine motor skills in right hand (so "teach him to shoot righty" is not an option). He'll probably start with one of my Glock 19s (of what we have, he likes the fit/feel best- until he grows into a 1911 8-) ) Bought him a used lefty fobus paddle holster and it is friggin' TIGHT! He basically pulls his pants over his head trying to draw from it

I figure I can dremel it out a bit, or drill out one of the rivets around the trigger guard. Anybody successfully modded a fobus? I do not care about damaging the holster, so all advice is sound.

Yeah, I got a Fobus for my Glock 17 and had the same problem. I wound up getting a Black Hawk Serpa holster with the release button. It works slick and may solve your problem. On my Fobus I got my wife's hair blower and got the plastic very, very warm, then inserted the Glock 1/2 way into the holster to its maximum expansion point, before it snaps into place and left it there in that position until the plastic cooled down. That seemed to loosen it up some. But the Black Hawk seems like a better solution. Good luck!

I'd echo the black hawk option, loosening plastic holsters is a pain.

I had the same issue with my fobus, thought I was going to have to send it back. I sprayed a little silicone spray into it, as the instructions suggested, and now it works perfectly. Before you couldn't get the gun out of the holster to save your life. Give it a shot, might just work for you.

That's the other half of the problem. The belt was fine (CQB Solutions duty belt), but he is a skinny kid. Anchoring anything to him is an issue. I'm thinking that I might paint a band of superglue around his waist to keep his pants from moving up or down!

If you heat up the holster, you can loosen it up some. You have to heat it up enough to be hot enough to be pliable, but make sure that it does not become glossy or wet in appearance (that's too hot). Then, insert the gun and stretch it out, like Jeepster did. Hair dryers work well, and heat guns with multiple settings work better. Just make sure you don't melt the thing.
