SKS scope mount

Postby Scratch on Sun Feb 13, 2011 9:18 am

I want a better scope mount for my SKS. I got one of those cheezy reciever cover mounts that come off easily for free but it just doesn't hold it's accuracy. Can anyone suggest a good solid more permanent mount for a scope on an SKS. I'd like to be able to install it myself, but if I need to go to a gunsmith, I will. I've heard someone makes a decent one, but I can't remember the name.

Choate makes one that gets very good reviews:

It requires tapping and drilling the receiver (obviously), as well as modifying the stock.

I don't remember who makes it, but there is a mount for a pistol scope that goes on your rear sight base instead of the ladder sight. It's probably better than the dust cover mounts, but then you are limited to long eye relief scopes.

The most solid mount is one that bolts to the side of the receiver. There are a couple of styles, one is Choate, and another is an AK-type side rail. There are also a few scout mounts. There is one that mounts to the gas tube shield, some that mount directly to a replacement gas tube. I'd be a little worried about those. There are also a couple of mounts that replace the rear sight: http://www.dillonprecision.com/content/ ... =4881#4881

I have a siderail I was planning to install, but never got to. The others I just saw around the intarwebs and have no personal experience with.

Resurecting this old thread -

I want to examine (measure) one of the Choate SKS scope mounts.

Has anyone seen one in any of the shops in the area?

Does anyone have one that I could take a quick look at?

TIA,
Tom
