Removing brass punch scuffs from sights?

Postby onebohemian on Thu Mar 20, 2008 7:32 am

I've got some brass transfer on a sight after having removed it a couple of times with a punch. I swabbed it with some Hoppes bore cleaner, thinking that product would dissolve it away, but no luck. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm thinking I should buy a bottle of the Hoppes product that removes copper fouling, but am curious if anyone has had success with something else before I try that.

Thanks,
Mark

Yeah - next time try a steel punch

That ought to remove those pesky brass marks. :D

Try dabbing some cold blue on the marks.
It worked for me.

BTW, the cold blue seems to dissolve the brass, not just color it.

And before you try the copper solvent, you can try some ammonia. It's the key ingredient in most of the copper solvents anyway.

Have you tried your ordinary gun cleaner?
I was surprised at how easy brass scuff marks came off for me with Hoppes #9.
