Surefire 60 shot magazine

Postby clemmac on Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:55 pm

Several friends decided that they'd like to try one of the 60 round Surefire magazines, so I ordered some. They showed up today (Saturday!) on the FedEx truck and since it's a beautiful day and I had, by now, convinced myself that I should try one too, I went shooting :D

Mine worked just as expected, it loads reasonably easily to the full 60 shot capacity. It slips into and out of the magazine well very nicely on the carbine I grabbed (it happened to be a DPMS lower receiver). The 60 shot Surefire magazine fed the 60 rounds of M193 ammunition without a hitch of any kind and held the bolt/carrier open after the last round fired.

Yup, mine was a very brief function test, but I feel that the magazine will perform as expected next time also. I still think that they are more expensive than they should be, but a guy really needs a new toy now and then.

Please keep us updated on how it keeps working. Seriously considering getting one of these for 3-gun comps, but damn they're expensive. I really want to make sure they are dead reliable before I drop the coin.

Yes, I'll try to send an update when I can, but it may not be very quickly. It's winter here and in Morris too I'm sure, so I don't get out to practice unless the weather cooperates.

A friend asked John Farnam if John had had any folks using these magazines in John's rifle training classes. John's response was something along the lines of "the 60 rounders have worked great, the 100 rounders have not performed as well".

so YOUR'S worked well, how about the rest? this may interest me, as i have a distant cousin who is in USMC Basic (makes me proud, and his dad and grandpa too) and i'm almost certain he's going to deploy. they all are.

anyways, i'd like to get a couple, possibly, for him. make him think of the family here in MN and might save his life in a moment where a reload would otherwise be needed

Nobody close by here has actually used one yet, at least not that I know of. Farnam's students have had good luck as I mentioned above. Maybe some of the Minnesota Gun Talk folks will get out and give one a test.

I'm feeling positive about how well the rest of Surefire 60 rounders work, but that's simply a feeling :o

I have had mine for about 3 months now. I have run maybe 400-500 rounds through it with no issues at all. I have been nothing but happy with it and would buy more in a second if they werent so expensive. I was skeptical at first of the follower but it has been great so far.

A friend in Billings, Montana tried out two new Surefire 60 shot magazines yesterday. He shot two different rifles, a Colt and a DPMS and reported no problems or concerns at all, he was pleased with the results of his brief test. 8-)

thanks guys. i think i'll see about getting one or two for my cousin then. they're a bit spendy, but if it'd save him the two seconds for a reload, it could save his life

Seen a lot of mixed reviews on them but Aim had them on sale a couple of weeks ago for $99 shipped so I broke down and bought one, mostly for 3-gun.

I've run about 300 rounds through it with mostly good luck in my JP. Had a couple issues (around 6 or 7 instances) when I was alternating my 55 grain load and 69 grain load in the same mag. (to try and save ammo during testing) Not exactly sure why but it would fail to feed the 55 grain load occasionally after firing the 69 grainer. When ran seperate, no problems. Go figure. I've done that test before in regular mags with no issues.

Still need to do some more testing till I'm happy with it.
Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

The first time I tried mine, I noticed at around round #40 it loaded very hard for a couple of rounds, then things went well again. When it came time to shoot, things were good until about round #10, then the mag would not feed any more rounds. It seems the follower was binding deep inside. When I turned the mag upside down, rounds would fall out with the follower still stuck. I was using XM193 and the rounds were almost touching the front of the mag when loaded.

I took the mag apart, cleaned it, lightly spray lubed it, put it back together and everything has been perfect since. I have used it at two 3-gun matches and several training trips.

I am guessing the mag had something just a little out of place from the factory or from me loading it the first time. It has been perfect since the first issue.

You have to (should) clean them prior to use and I would recommend that you use a GOOD quality DRY lube inside and you have to clena them. You should clean all fo the mags tha tyou own especially for an AR.

I recommend mag cleaning as a part of regular maint...
