Big fixed blade knife

Postby JoeH on Thu Mar 15, 2012 2:44 pm

I'm wondering what some of you guys are using for big, fixed blade knives. My fixed blade knives are all of the smaller variety for skinning/dressing game. I'm interested in picking up a large knife for... well, just because...

I'm looking at the Cold Steel Leatherneck-SF. I could spend more, but why?

Thoughts?

I use KA-BAR for big fixed blades.

I have had the drop-point for 9 yrs. It was a gift from my wife about the time we got married. It's my wedding "ring" so to speak(kind of a long story). It's dressed and skinned small and large game, put up tents, cleared brush, and rode along with me in the car before I got my carry permit. It was stolen last year out of my truck and later returned to me. it has only needed to be sharpened twice. the tanto I have had for 2 yrs, and honestly I haven't used it yet, but It will see action once I retire the drop point to the "jewelry box" ;)

I would suggest something useful, maybe by a custom/semi custom knife maker.

If you are getting it for just because, then the sky's the limit. if you have a purpose in mind, then it must fit your criteria, not ours. we can only give you suggestions. I have a small collection of knives.....around 70. most of them were just because buys. just because buys end up being either put in a box to hang on to or given away/sold/thrown out because you don't like them or they are junk. I had several that fit that bill. Heck, you may have a purpose for one and you will find out it don't work for ya.

That is bad ass! Great suggestion.

As for intended use, this knife may make it to the BWCA. It may also appear at the Zombie Shoot. Otherwise, it'll sit in the man cave.

I have a becker knife/tool co. brute recurve.
1/4" thick 9 1/2" recurve blade. Nice piece for the money, it has done everything from chopping down trees/shrubs, to splitting wood.

They were a camillus company, but I believe they all got bought out by SOG. I'm not sure of the quality of their current production knives.
IIRC I paid around 50-60 for mine years ago.

Kabars are great for the price point. I have a couple M9 bayonets. Chris Reeve makes beautiful knives, but pricey.
