Does this count as a big knife?

Sword might be a better category. What sort of bayonet is that, M1903...polished, refinished or reproduction?

It's a Chi-Com reproduction M1905 pattern Bayonet. $29.99 from Cheaper than Dirt. Real ones go for $200 - $400

Big fixed blade knife

Postby JoeH on Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:59 pm

I ended up not going too big. I bought an ESEE Model 5. I just got it last night and really like it. It's hefty and super sharp.

I also picked up an Izula on the same order.

I bought both with winnings from a weight loss challenge. :D

The Esee -5 is about the right size. I have the 4" and it is a tad too small for the tasks that I am asking it to do.

Im not overly impressed with the ESEE 4 ...... If I had it to do over again (and I just might) I would get the 5.

The 5 is heavy. That's the only drawback.

The sheath is exceptional. It's kydex, has a lock, the belt clip is removable, and it'll accept molle mounts.

The Model 6 is lighter/thiner and has about .5" more cutting edge. It also has a plastic sheath that isn't nearly as nice. It's less expensive and some say easier to handle. Pros and Cons.

I think that I will give my ESEE-4 to someone that deserves a descent bushcraft knife. I am going to get the 5 like I said I am not impressed with the 4..

I am asking this knife to be a big knife and not a small knife - the 4 is a small knife and is not really up to the tasks that I thought that it would be capable of. There are better tools out there.

Next investment is an estwing Camp Axe.

i was pretty surprised the first time i handled a 4" blade. compared to the 5" i got as a kid, i think i liked the 4" better. granted, i'm talking about a Buck Knife and not something like that ESSE-4, but still. then again, i'm still partial to my KaBar ;)

Hey, truth be told, I have an OLD Schrade trapper - small thin locking blade - sharp as a scalpel and made from real carbon steel.

I bought 2 of them when they were still made in Ellenville, NY - this is the knife that I take into the woods hunting that gets the bulk of the work - basically it is hte most useful woods tool that I own and compared to any ESEE it is tiny.

I would have to go along with sheepshead chopper-offer. I can chop down a oak tree or take off an arm, leg or head in one fell swoop. Sheath fastens nicely to your belt and lower end ties to your leg. I have had one for 40 years and it's as good today as the day I had it made. 8-)
