Buck 119 Special. Fits your price range, Will hold a good edge, awesome warranty and customer service, beefy enough to bust the pelvic bone on a big whitetail and a fine enough tip to pick a sliver. I've got an entire drawer full of hunting knives with some costing much more, but this is what always goes in my pack and has for the last 20 years.

I think Zero Tolerance makes some of the best knives around and they are extremely cost-effective. Cruise around over at BladeHQ http://www.bladehq.com/

I've had a variety of fancy folders over the years, mostly BenchMade and Microtech automatics, but none of them are as well-made or as impressive IMHO as the ZeroTolerance spring assist 350 that I use. If it were me, I'd get the ZeroTolerance knife and take it to Orion Arms in Lino Lakes and have it laser engraved.

Yeah, it's out of the OP's stated price range.

The price range puts you solidly in the 420/440 steels category with a lot of long term well proven models. The Buck traditional models and Case are well proven. The Puma Catamount II with a stag handle is inexpensive for what you get.

Check out Cold Steel. I really like some of their Pendleton Hunter line. They have quality steel in their knives, and that line of theirs, is one that I can actually tolerate. I do have one of the cheapie Roach Belly knives, and absolutely love it! Just wish the handle was a touch longer.

Thanks for the input, guys! I'll look over the suggestions and see what I find that looks like a winner.

Use to be a big Benchmade fan, but that fad has past. I have some favorite brands and models, right now I am carrying a couple different models of Kershaw and have been very happy with them.

I've had terrible luck with kershaw. I personally wouldnt recommend them to friends but I'm hard on my knives, like using it as a screw driver and prybar. I know its my fault since they're not meant to be used in such a way but after taking advice from this thread I got a zero tolerence 0350 and its still running strong even after being used and abused.
