Lets talk about belts.

Holsters, lights, or any kind of accessory

For pistol courses I use a Brokos belt on an HSGI belt with Cobra buckle. Very comfortable. For three gun type stuff I use a competition type belt from BladeTech (same as a CR Speed) with mag carriers etc interchangeable on TekLoks. I like the low profile and the security of the inner belt system. The holsters are drop-offset interchangeable on TMMS modular plates. For carbine courses I use the Brokos belt and a MAV chest rig. For every day carry with jeans, I use a simple instructors belt. I don't think I've ever carried wearing slacks or dressier clothes. If I did, I'd probably want some kind of stiff dress belt.

For competition I prefer the two piece belt, as it is far more convenient. Do you need to run a two piece belt just to play the game or to win matches? Absolutely not! Anyone that says otherwise has never met Kurt or Eric Miller. Last year I was squaded with them at the Midwest 3-Gun Championships, where Eric won the Tac-optics division and Kurt won the Tac-Irons division. Both were using typical riggers style belt, traditional shotshell caddies and all around very basic gear. So don't get the impression that you need to buy a dedicated competition belt just to get out there and try 3-gun,USPSA or any of the other gun "games". Run what you have and go send some rounds downrange.

For everyday wear and USPSA I wear a Galco rigger style belt. I use a Blackhawk holster and mag pouches all basic stuff and have fun doing it.

I wear a CompTec belt every day whether I am carrying or not. It has a tapered end which I find much more comfortable.

+1 on the Looper belt and Unholstered.com. Plus, Ron apparently sprints to the post office within seconds of receiving your order.

Mine's about three years old. I wear it every day and it's going strong. Still only $44.99.

For IDPA, the belt needs to go through your belt loops so you want 1.5" or maybe 1.75". Lots of folks use the rigger's belts in IDPA. The 2-part belts are legal for everything else, AFAIK.

I've got a Wilderness Instructor belt I wear pretty much all the time. I really like it.

I also have two of the Fusion Rigger belts, I like them too but pretty much only wear them on the range.

I like the 5-stitch Wilderness Instructor belts in 1.5". If I want something dressier, I have belts from andysleather.com. He uses heavy bridle leather; they look great and do a good job.

Lets talk about belts.

Postby LumberZach on Wed Mar 05, 2014 9:37 pm

Thanks for all the info guys, I got a lot of options to check now! Like I said I have a 5.11 trainer right now that works pretty well. I would like a riggers style belt, but I am worried about it looking too out of place or attracting attention in public. Primarily I want to do competition stuff to practice weapon handling more than gaming. I figure I should be looking at a stiffened leather belt more than anything. I might try a few options out, just some good places to start.

Can anyone recommend Twin Cities shops which carry a wide variety of either strong leather, or gun-specific belts?

As a side note, I cannot recomend the OSOE Gear Cobra Riggers belt for carry. Its floppy as hell. It is a decent non-gun belt though. I bought mine for work where I cannot carry so it works out for me anyways.

Well yeah, but as I understand it you have an entirely independent suspension system for your holster.

True. My belt holds up my pants, and carries my knife. My pistol is independently supported.

Chris Christie has a few belts that he is getting rid of. They might fit me.
