ASP batons

Postby CraigJS on Wed May 21, 2014 10:39 am

Anyone know where I can purchase an ASP baton (legal) without going through the BS of the federal restrictions. I'm a permit holder and would like to have/carry one while walking my 3yr. grandson and 3 mo. old granddaughter. I prefer not to carry my pistol and would be used for dogs etc. Seems stupid that I can buy and carry a pistol but NOT a baton.. Anyone?

Streicher's in St. Louis Park or Keeper's in St. Paul are options, otherwise you can get them online too... I got mine from Galls and didn't have any issues.

Also, get properly trained, it's easy to turn this "less than lethal" weapon into a lethal one.

What Federal restrictions are there? I believe there aren't any nor are there any state ones. Stop in at Striecher's, Uniforms Unlimited, any other police supply store in the area, or even gun shops or other stores carrying personal protection items and walk out with one. Or mail order, you might get an ASP cheaper there.

Personally, if I had a concern regarding dogs I would carry a can of dog or bear repellent as it is very effective and has a much greater range than a nightstick. At 30" a nightstick allows a dog to get much closer than I care for. One would be much better served with a walking staff which would allow the use of both hands with a reach at least as far as a nightstick using one hand or a couple feet greater reach if swinging one handed.

A walking staff is also not seen as a weapon nearly to the degree a baton would be and, if you had to actually strike a dog, the owner might not get nearly as incensed. If they did, all the reasons a staff would be preferred for a dog would apply to a human.

Also, get some training, it will allow to consider various means of using whatever you decide to use which can only be to your benefit. If you only know one method or technique you are greatly handicapped.

I have a Cold Steel "Black Thorn" cane/walking stick now. Wanted something a bit less obvious to the 3 yr. old. If all else fails I carry the PCR with 124 HSTs in it..
Spray I have Fox labs best now also. Wind direction maybe a problem with little ones around. Hell maybe I just want one. :)

Keeprs and Streichers won't sell to civilians. If you can't find an ASP at a local gun shop or sporting goods store, order one online.

You mean Streichers won't sell batons to civilians? Why would that be?

I had a buddy buy one a few years ago from Steichers, he's not a LEO. Maybe they have changed since then.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure I will be) but is it not illegal, even with a permit to carry, to carry any kind or brand of "collapsible baton" on your person?

Batons might fall under the umbrella "dangerous weapon" statute in the city of Minneapolis, but are not prohibited statewide.

Keep in mind that a baton could very well be a LETHAL weapon, especially in the hands of somebody without baton training. If you pull one on somebody, especially on a police officer or somebody with a firearm and carry permit, they may be justified in putting some holes in your body.

I have bough guns, ammo, OC spray and a lot of things at Streichers, that is why I asked if a baton had special restrictions.

Yep, I've had non-LEO friends buy batons from Streichers withing the last few months, at least I'm pretty sure it was from there.

I know if I was walking down the street and someone came at me with a collapsible baton, I would be in fear of great bodily harm or death. So yeah, tread carefully.

These are not prohibited items to carry, but training is so very important.

Reread my first post. I said for dogs. I have MUCH more lethal things for "bad" guys... Thanks have ordered a couple on line. May have Mpls cop next door give me some pointers etc. FYI he said he as a Mpls cop had NO problems with me carrying a baton, only knives with blades longer than 4".

Right, because a 3.75" knife isn't a problem.

Sorry, it's a dumb law, and another hidden gem of having a carry permit is ignoring it.

I agree it's a stupid law. But, a permit to carry a pistol has NOTHING to do with carrying a knife....

It has nothing to do with the law. It's a business policy. Ownership has stated that they aren't supposed to be selling any of their products to "non industry" people. I.E. non LE, FD, security, EMS, etc. If they sold to someone who isn't, the person selling wasn't asking. If you can do it, fine. I've been in there and watched them refuse sales to people who weren't "qualified". They're more restrictive with things like handcuffs and guns, but it depends on who you talk to.
