Polycarbonate Safety Glasses - Scratch repair/polish

Postby EJSG19 on Fri Jun 04, 2010 9:54 am

I haven't posted a stupid question in a while, so I feel the need to advertise my stupidity once again evidently. So on with the statement and question.

I am embarrassed to say how many pairs of safety glasses I have bought over the past five years, only to have them get scratched up due to careless handling or accidental scratches. I try to get ansi rated Z87 glasses (I think that is right anyway), but without fail, they get scratched up within a few months. Ok there was the statement part.

Is there a way to buff or polish Polycarbonate lenses either back to new condition, or at least to minimize specks and scratches in the plastic? Without getting into the Billy Mays infomercial junk, I was curious if anyone has found something that actually works? There is the question part.

Thanks everyone.

You can test stuff methods on CD's although they have a coating to decrease scratching. I tried 2000g wet/dry on a flashlight lens I had fogged with super glue and that was a miserable failure. I tried some kind of polish and a Dremel and that was fail as well.

yeah I thought about the finest compound I can think of (jeweler's rouge) on a buff wheel. But I expect it would leave a fogged finish, and not the clear finish a lense needs. haven't tried it, as the couple pairs are still serviceable.

If you stumble across an answer, make sure you get paid for the information. There are likely millions of us out there. I have at least half a dozen pair - just in my gun room - that aren't really serviceable. More in the garage. The industry (folks who make protective eye wear) prolly know how to fix scratches. They could sell you the fix for pennies, or a new pair for dollars. I think they have people assassinated for discovering the solution.

 my thoughts exactly. Anyone who makes these things would surely know. It might be more involved than polishing, maybe its a new liquid coating or whatever they do at the factory (short of taking molten plastic and molding new lenses).

Did it include a four letter word, throwing them on the ground, and ending their miserable existence with 230 grains of lead and copper?

If so, we're on the same page 8-)

I buy them at Viking safety supply, When I wore contacts, I would go thru them a lot, and I got tired of paying lumberyard prices for them, until I found Viking, Lots of styles, 2 to 4 dollars a pair. Who cares if they get scratched up then, just toss them
