Deer Scopes - what do you like? What about a Redfield?

Postby Shipyard on Sat Jul 03, 2010 11:44 am

So my butterfingers buddy the other day decides it would be a good idea to drop my deer rifle onto concrete scope side down.

beautiful...

it could have been worse, it was just a bushnell fixed 4 power i've had for years and was messing around with, so i wan't as upset as if it was a monarch or other such goodie. i've been looking around for something to replace it with.

Main question is: what would you recomend for a good deer scope in the under $400 range?

while a nice VX-II always looks nice for under $500, i see that leupold has now bought out the redfield name and is making scopes under the brand again. they seem to be VERY reasonably priced and i havn't read one bad word about them int he reviews i've found. however, as we all know this interweb is some serious **** and you can't always believe all you read.

was wondering if anyone has one of the new redfields and what your opinion is on it. i'm looking at the 3-9 x 40 to put on top of my Tikka T3 in 30-06. i hunt northerw WI and MN so the longest shot i've ever taken at a critter was just over 100 yards (droped him where he stood too :D ) so i'm not too worried about paralax and the like. i do enjoy the once a year i get onto a longer range with it so that's why i look for a 3-9x adjustable.
i do what i can, where i'm needed, and i ask so little in return. i'm a true humanitarian fueled by rainbows and whiskey. you should be so lucky to know me...

For deer hunting I like Leupold's 1.5-5 or 2-7 models.

IMO the best buy out there right now for glass quality, toughness, and function is the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 which can be bought brand new for $235.
Glass is equal to (many folks say very slightly better) the new Leupold VX-3. Full lifetime transferable warranty with a 1 year, no questions asked, 100% refund as well if not satisfied.
These scopes also feature Rainguard which works as advertised.

Here is a link with several retailers to choose from.

The old Redfield Widefield scopes have been my favorite scopes for years. For my eyes, the light gathering was much better than all of the more expensive Leupold scopes I have. This has almost nothing to do with the new Redfield scopes now being made by Leupold.

I have also heard, Bushnell's are a good value.

In order of preference, Sightron, Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell.
