Multi-tool

Postby Countryfried Frank on Mon Mar 21, 2011 6:06 am

I know I'm about to catch a bucket full of it for the mere mention of a bushing wrench but I still think there is a significant degree of cool factor to THIS. I haven't used it and I probably won't buy one so I can't recommend it but I sure wouldn't mind having one in my range bag.

I have the caspian version and it is a POS. That one looks slightly different than mine (mine had no bit driver). It is made in china, the allen wrenches didn't fit anything, (although the small one can be used as punch). The blades/tools are hard fold out. The bushing wrenches aren't the right size either.

Buy a bushing wrench and a leatherman.

Multitools are more for quick on the range....immediate work on the field use. Having the right tools for the job beats any "cool" factor. It is also much easier to work on stuff having separate tools.

I prefer a non-marring bushing wrench. They are cheap. Have one in your range bag and one at home at a minimum. Depending on your grip screws you may want the proper size hex wrench. Otherwise, what else do you need?

I do keep a Leatherman Wave in my bag. It's not a specialty tool; I bring it hunting, fishing, etc. I wouldn't do that with a gun-specific tool.

Bushing wrenches are for sissies. :P

I have a high durometer plastic one that I never use, since it's harder to control the recoil plug with it than without. My bushing is tight, but no bushing needs to be so tight that it can't be turned by hand while the slide is out of battery (and the plug depressed of course).

Apparently real men take apart their 1911 only using it's own pieces as tools.

Sadly, I can't pull this off with torx grip screws and a two piece full length guide rod.
