Some of you will remember that I made a Crossbreed-style IWB for my GP100: lets see your Kydex projects

Well it's been a year and a half of almost daily wear and it's worked out pretty well, but finally the .06" Kydex body cracked. I may have heated & bent it a little too much.

Image

So anyway I was in Frontiersman and they had this in the clearance bin, a Minotaur MTAC, for $25.

Image

SIG P239, Ruger GP100... close enough, right?

Long story short (I'll post more later), I had a piece of Kydex that Goodmedicine was kind enough to give me, and presto change-o... They don't make the Minotaur for the GP100 -- but I do!

$85 holster for $25. Life is good.

I had my Supertuck for a year or two of mostly daily wear. One day with the holster empty, (don't remember why) I pressed the kydex onto the leather. Crack. Poor design? Material fatigue? Abuse? All the above? Maybe. Anyway, sent it in and got a new replacement. I don't push it. I suppose that's part of the deal with Kydex. Maybe someday I'll get an all leather IWB for my M&P. My TT for my P7 is really nice.

Damn! Props to you for lugging that beast around IWB style!

It's more comfortable than you might think. Just goes to show how much difference a good holster & belt make. I do want to get some more concealable grips.

Here's more construction info for anybody who's interested. (Thought I posted this a couple days ago, but I guess I never hit 'Submit'.) You can click on the photos for larger versions.

Here’s the GP lined up on the Minotaur leather. (Oh, good, it does look like it’ll fit!) It's much more nicely finished and has nicer hardware than my homemade holster. Note the sight channel form, aka a pencil. Also note the screw posts in the upper right; I’ll need to mark where to drill holes for them in my wooden molding jig.

Boom! Marked.

Everything in place to have Kydex molded over it:

Into the oven...

...for 6 minutes at 350 degrees.

And here is my Kydex press in action:

The Kydex shell now has its basic shape:

Since my last holster project I've acquired a Dremel tool. They’re great for cutting plastic:

When I bought the cutting wheels I wondered why they came in pack of 36. Turns out they're easy to break.

Final trimming, sand the edges smooth, a touch with the heat gun (since my last project I have also acquired a heat gun) to fine tune the fit, and ta-da!

Very cool! I wouldnt have known how to do that.

Had the same experience with dremel "cutting" wheels or whatever else those flimsy wafer things cant hold up to. Finally went and got dremel metal grinding wheels. Thicker for cutting, but dont explode in your eyes under the slightests sideways deformation.
