What do you carry in your range bag?

Postby sapalas on Sun Sep 16, 2012 7:25 am

I am new range shooting, always just shot in the back forty of the in-laws. I am figuring out that I need to carry some kind of range bag, since every time I go I seem to have forgotten something different.

What type of bag should I look for? (duffle style vs. backpack)
What do you guys carry in a range bag?
Is it dedicated to that bag or do you pull it out of there when you need the same thing somewhere else?
Any other helpful hints?

Order up a range bag from Midway.

Put a couple screw drivers, Allen's, oil, marker/pens, whatever you might need to fix your equipment.

Yeh, the big Midway bag is pretty good and extremely cost-effective. Personally, I keep shooting stuff in my range bag, not tools. I keep tools and cleaning stuff in a separate hard tool box and usually don't bring it with me unless it's a course or an all-day range session. I've found that a multi-tool covers what little repair work I need at the range. I'm reluctant to detail a firearm at the range. Likewise, I seen no need to clean at the range....just lube, maybe.

My range bag is sort of a "go" bag. I keep it ready all the time so I don't have to scramble around trying to stock it. It has everything I need to shoot on a given day.

    eye protection
ear protection (Surefire plugs and the Sordins)
    knee pads, elbow pads
    weapon light, handheld flashlight
    bug/sunscreen towels (Field Shield)
    handi wipes
batteries for lights and optics (CR123)
    multitool with appropriate hex bits
    multi-tasker for the AR
    dummy rounds
    extra pistol magazines
    shooting gloves (Mechanixwear)
    laser rangefinder
    binoculars
    lube
    microfiber rag
    50 yard tape measure
    masking tape for taping targets

It's important to have a first aid kit. I bring one of those as well as a gunshot wound kit including an IBD from Calvary Arms http://www.cavalrymanufacturing.com/medical/medical.html

I have a mil-surp bag with pouches for 6 magazines on the outside (AR style), a large middle pouch, and two smaller outside pouches between the magazines and the main center pouch. If I find a picture of it I'll post it.

Things dedicated to the range bag:
stapler and staples
targets
Ear muffs
foam ear plugs
binoculars
screw drivers

Things that typically go in the bag on shooting trips:
ammo
magazines
eye-pro
cleaning kit

Also, on any given day I have a backpack that goes EVERYWHERE with me, in that bag is a First Aid Kit, flashlight, and multi-tool(amongst other unrelated items).

Eyes
Ears
Ammo
Guns
Mags
Oil
Pen
Targets
Allen key set
Screwdrivers ( + and -)

I have the smaller of the two midway bags, and I love it. I had another bag that worked but it wasn't the greatest. A lot of thought went into those bags, and for the price you cant beat them.

I searched and found this thread before starting a new one.

Outside of the obvious eyes, ears, firearms, ammo, I have:

knife
marker
tape
crappy multitool
flashlight
small targets (bigger ones don't fit in my backpack)
spare foam earplugs

I'm adding:
squib rod
minor first aid stuff
bag for brass

At my range at home, I just pull my truck up to the shooting line so I can leave ammo in the big dry boxes in the back of the truck. Since I now do a lot of shooting at the local indoor range in Baxter, I have to have a way to carry the stuff over my shoulder so I have taken to carrying ammunition and extra magazines in a 5.11 Bail Out Bag that I carry in addition to the range bag. I have two...for pistol, loose rounds + LULA loader and the magazines stored in the side pockets (holds 9). For AR's, it will carry about 17 loaded magazines.

i have some masking tape and sharpies in mine, gun oil, one of those drivers with interchangable bits, ear plugs and muffs, an UpLula, targets, pasties, a GunTool, a Leatherman, and a cheap knife. then ammo, gun, etc

usually a good idea to have a tube of Super Glue as well, and some bandaids. a little cut can turn into a big mess otherwise

Back in the day, shooters would use competition pistol cases:

They don't seem to be all that popular, anymore.
