Wall safe? Between studs, recessed.

Postby EJSG19 on Tue Jan 29, 2013 8:18 am

I've got open studs in a couple rooms I am finishing right now. Wondering about putting in a locking cabinet or wall safe, preferably one tall enough for long guns. Has anyone bought one and had good luck with a certain model? My only experience with them is V-line, and that experience has been fine, although $500+ for their stud cavity wall safe is a little more than necessary for what I need. This one would need to be concealed in plain sight somehow with a mirror/picture or something.

What have you done to accomplish this? Is there a more reasonable product? This thing does not need to withstand a Chinese bombardment, it does need to stop bored children for 15 minutes.

My first thought: http://www.vlineind.com/ProductDetail.php?product_id=32

It does need to be non-electric locking and quick access type. I have a thing about electronic locks and therefore that is not negotiable.

My second thought is build something myself, but I'm not experienced installed doors with locks like this, nor do I know where to get just a door to fit this description.

Is there anyone other than V-line? If you find one that is non-electric lock and quick access (by with I assume you mean code not key), please post and let others know I thought in this catorgory that Vline was the only option.

Woud a regular plywood enclosure work with something like this on the corners?

Since you're only worried about kids, the door not being steel wouldn't be an issue.

Let me know if you get that. I've decided that my quick access safe will have a simplex lock and those in-between stud safes are attractive for just that purpose.

It sounds like you're looking for something upmarket, but Home Depot lists something about that size for $122:

Works well especially in an area you can't see or expect to see a metal enclosure been studs. Works well for me for one needs. Great for easy access long guns but won't keep someone from getting into it if they find it. Work for me.
