revolver/woods=holster

Postby Eleanor08 on Tue Mar 25, 2014 5:20 pm

Hey folks, looking for some advice.

I have a Ruger GP100 5" that I plan to carry in the woods this year. I am looking for a good holster for it. I am thinking a shoulder holster, and would like to hear from folks who carry in the woods.

I currently carry a 1911 in the woods with typically a OSW holster, but am wanting something like a shoulder because on and off of ATVs / UTVs a lot.

Any suggestions?

Simply Rugged makes a nice belt holster, though pricey. I carry a S&W 686 in the woods and it is very comfortable.

I don't get out in the woods much, sad to say, but from guys on rugerforum.net I hear a lot of good things about the Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake, and the optional 'Chesty Puller' harness.

Thank you all for your help. After some serious research I bought a Diamond D Alaskan Guide holster. Looked at a Simply Rugged with the chesty puller. I just wasn't sure about the holster riding high on my chest. Then I looked at a Tanker holster from El Paso, but it just looked to darn big..

I placed my order last night, and they shipped it to day so we will soon see.

Once you get it, please let me know how you like it. I have been looking for a good shoulder holster for my 629 and came across their website, seemed interesting.

bianchi makes a holster albeit for the Beretta 92/M9 series. Not that I am saying it would work for you, but consider the retention requirements in the woods vs the concrete jungle. I have the shoulder, hip and thigh systems for this thing. Rather neat how it converts to "whatever". There is a thumbbreak kit for it too.

I would MUCH rather carry with a full flap holster over something that is less secure. Cuz it truly WOULD suck to loose that piece out in the woods.

Here is another idea in lieu of a holster, discreet, plus space for other essentials like means to start a fire, etc.

Here is the review of the Diamond D holster I bought.

First its for a Ruger Gp100 5"
I added a cartridge holder
I ordered Sunday night, it arrived Thursday.
It cost $207.00 total.

First impression is that it is exactly what I wanted, I like where it rides, I like the direction the muzzle points, and the fit and finish is excellent. It doesn't fell like its really on when your wearing it.

I will add to this once I get it out in the woods, but so far I really like it..

Pics.

I also have a diamond d. Mine is for a 460V and i think it's about the only way to carry it. Only complaint is that it's still a little tight so I can't draw as easy as I'd like but I think it's loosening up.

I like that rig but really want something that completely covers the trigger!

It doesn't appear that the revolver is all the way in. Mine fully covers the trigger.

Took a picture of my 460V in the Diamond D holster. I noticed when I got it out for this picture it has loosened up nicely, so I am very happy with this holster.
