DIY cheek riser

I had been looking for an alternative to buying a sheet of kydex, saw a discarded TV in the alley, and thought I’d give the plastic housing a try.

Here’s the results from the proof of concept.

Just 9$ of hardware, and some fit and finish later:

Looks pretty stupid to me, especially with the scope mounted so high above the action of the rifle.

Use proper scope mounting techniques, proper rings, and don't destroy a good walnut stock by drilling holes in it for a piece of plastic which will break in cold weather.

My opinion.

Although not quite as ornery as OM is today I'd have to agree, drop the scope rings and use the cheek pc already on the stock.

Why would you drill 2 huge holes through a beautiful piece of wood and stick to carriage bolts in it. There are a number of options that would not destroy the stock and look a lot better.

Please before you hack any more firearms get some help from someone that knows better.

I personally don't like that particular implementation, but appreciate that he told us that he used the back of a tv for it. Could be useful for someone wanting to make a cheap quick sheath for a knife or something.

Sheesh guys....settle down. For one thing it's a factory Rem 700 stock. You can buy them cheap off eBay all day long because they get replaced half the time, so no big loss there. Scope might be a bit higher than needed, but looks like it says 4-16x50 on it. If this is a heavy barrel rifle, a 50mm objective scope generally takes high to X-high rings to make things clear. You can't tell from the pics, but just saying.

So what if it's not master class work, he did it himself, didn't hardly spend a dime to do it, and in no way affected the way the functionality of the rifle. For that everyone jumps all over his ****. Nice friendly local gun forum we have here. No wonder there are so few active posters here these days.

Not everyone, I merely pointed out you can get 8 sheet packs of Kydex for under $10. OP's rifle he can do what he wants with it.

That said I assume OP posted with the expectation people would comment.

I appreciate the creativity applied by the OP in finding (and sharing) an inexpensive material with which to create a stock riser which do get pretty overpriced when purchased as a kit online (typically $40-$60 for a flap of Kydex, 2 bolts and 2 wingnuts...).

I'd personally opt against drilling holes in an original walnut stock to mount a $9 cheek riser when, as previously stated, lower rings or a smaller scope could likely get the comb where it needed for a good cheek weld... but to each their own.

I'm just glad I didn't tell you guys how I tried to free-float the barrel. When I post my next DIY project, I'll make sure to start with a disclaimer.

I thought this project would be interesting to people who might want to put a scope on an old rifle. This one is an old ADL model, and I thought that the comb was at a height for the iron sights; too low for a scope with even the lowest rigns. I might have been wrong about that. And I am guilty of using a pair of rings that I already had, even though they were too high.

If I just fill the holes with wood putty, will you guys please forgive me?

IF you drill a few more strategically placed holes it would provide for unlimited adjustability and also result in a light-weight "mountin' " rifle.

For the value of the pre modified rifle and scope you could buy a new Savage 11 TH rifle packaged with a Nikon scope. Honestly it would make more sense to have sold the original and replace with s new rifle rather than destroy an $85+ stock with $9 worth of parts all to make a set of junk drawer scope rings work.

It's not about being snobs, this was a totally unnecessary and destructive mod to a classic rifle which is what got people wound up. At least it was not an old Winchester 70.
