O/U Cases?

Postby FJ540 on Fri Dec 09, 2016 11:33 am

I got a 30" Condor Comp and need something other than the styro/cardboard box it came in.

Saw these: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... otgun.html and it looks good. Just not sure since I have no experience with them.

What are you guys using?

I just use a regular shotgun soft case. I don't like breaking it down, then putting it back together at the range to shoot, then apart to bring home then back together to go in the safe. It's easier to just toss it in a regular shotgun case and call it a day. I got my last two shotgun cases at Fleet Farm, nothing fancy.

This case may be a good option if you drive a smart car and can't physically fit an assembled shotgun in the car. Other than that it just seams like a lot of work.

Breaking it down is one latch and a tug on the forearm before unlocking the breech. Takes maybe 15 seconds.

True but I've seen more than one guy drop the barrels doing by the trunk of the car. I wipe it down with an oil rag, put it in a soft case, bring it home, let it get to room temp in the case, then take it apart to clean it before putting it away.

That's just the engineer in me. Why add unnecessary work that adds literally no value? Also as pointed out this increases your odds of a fumble. As with anything the more operations the more chance for error. If the operation adds literally zero benefit, eliminate it. It's not like you go to the range with your AR15 broken in half or take the slide off your pistol. That's just silly, so is breaking down an O/U shotgun. I don't know what you shoot but from my experience with NSCA and 5 stand you bring your gun ready to go. The exception are the guys with multiple barrels. If you shoot trap then who knows, those guys are a bunch of snobs. They again would from what I have seen would have at least two barrels though.

I don't shoot anything yet. This is my first target shotgun.

Right now, the gun fits my safe better in the factory box. It's easily the longest assembled gun I have.

Ditto on soft case. Fleet Farm, Menards etc. My trap gun gets suede soft case but that just 'cause.

Some fancier breakdown guns come with fitted leather and oak cases. Quite a bit more money than that.

Another option is to get a hard sided case that meets your dimensions from the pelican or storm case line and cut the foam to fit yourself.

That case they offered that you posted is probably about as cheap as you will find that will work for it.

Lots of places sell hard sided breakdown cases, but they are more money than that soft one. You could go to a gun store that has a good used section and see if there is something used you could buy. Talk with the counter guy as they probably trash a bunch of that stuff.

I've thought about a hard case. Not sure what way I'll go.

The kid's got a shotgun from his Grandpa that doesn't fit in my rifle side now either, and is stuck in at an angle. I might breakdown and reconfigure the shelf to make room for longer guns.

Wait....... We don't have to fieldstrip it to bring it home? I thought that is why they called in fieldstripping.

I just responded to your question......

Seems that you have two choices:
1) buy a cheaper case
2) buy a better shotgun

Well there is your problem, spend $5K - $15K on the shotgun, then the case looks like a bargain.
