Nikon Monarch 3 or Prostaff 7?

Postby yukonjasper on Sun Aug 06, 2017 10:49 pm

Anything else under $400 I should be looking at?

Going on a Tikka t3 lite 308 to be used for white tail hunting in the farm country in northern minnesota.

I'm an average shooter with no interest in future comptetive pursuits. Own a nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40 on my Bushmaster 223 and like the quality, but was thinking I'd go up a bit for the deer gun.

What say ye optics and hunting gurus?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have liked the monarch line. Have 3 of them. Good quality I feel at a decent price. They have 2.5-10. Most useful for a mn deer gun I think.

What about the new Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x? I realize it is marketed for tactical/gaming use but...

I about suggested that this morning when I saw this post. I'd spend the extra $10 though.

I would like to stick to something more conventional with a larger objective (40mm -42mm) for that last shot of the day in the woods, need all the light gathering I can get if I rotate to one of the Woods stands. I don't think I want a 50mm lens nor do I have the rings currently for that.

Gander has optics 30% off and a monarch 3 was $307 after discount. Tempting.

It's a bullet steering device. For your use, precise tracking isn't a huge issue, holding zero is.

Good glass with good coatings is better when it matters: dawn and dusk.

I personally had a Zeiss 3-9x40 on a Tikka 308 and it was perfect. Either of the scopes you mentioned will do the job well, I'd get the one with the better glass/coatings.

Oh, and don't go low-power variable. I have a few, love them for what they are, but they are not great hunting scopes.

Compare the exit pupil at the same power between a 3-9 and the 1-8.

Have you looked at the Burris fullfield II line?

My dad has the 3-9X40 on his Rem700 SPS 308 and I have the 4.5-14X42 on my 7.62x39 Ar upper.

I am not very familiar with zeiss. I assume they are a higher price point, are they?

Goalie, the rings on the Tikka are not set up to handle 50mm , correct?

What distances do you normally shoot? When I've stand hunted probably 75% of my kills were at less than 7 yards.

My most recent rifle purchase and the gun I would take deer hunting has this scope on it

Zeiss has several price points. I have a Zeus conquest which I believe is about an 800 scope. It is very nice, especially in low light but it is 2x the cost of a monarch 3 as well. You get what you pay for in glass I think. That said, for mn deer the monarch will be just fine during legal shooting hours. Nothing wrong with burris but I think for the price you quoted you are getting I peice of glass you will be happy with at a good price. As to the magnification comments, yes from a stand you likely will never need your upper end but it is nice to have just in case and always better to be in the middle of your scopes range than the upper end.

Longest practical shot would be about 200 yards. Average is probably 80 yards. Some are close (20-30 yards) which is why the 2.5 on the low end has some appeal. I have been tempted to bring old lever action model 94 30-30 for those shots or look under rings on the Rem 7400.

That Burris that I suggested would work well for that and still give the traditional scope look for $280 and no tax and free shipping.

Starting to research the Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42. I think the BDC reticle. $399 appears to be the price point. Some dicounts found on the Web however the shop near my home town will get the sale, free mount and bore site plus it supports a local business.

Does anyone have a competitive product they think could be considered?
