I never realized the m39 had a different forend cap than the mosin.

Its a Finnish M39 bayonet.
They made about 10,000 of them, only a few thousand are known to still exist. The Finnish soldiers either didn't like them, or already had their own knives, and many of them threw them away.
A friend of a friend in Finland had several of them, and finally agreed to sell me one about 1.5 years after I met him.
When I got this one, I saw some obvious fakes sell on Gunbroker for $400.
There are fakes out there, and honest repros.
