OWB Holster

Postby rucker on Wed Sep 05, 2007 3:19 pm

I am looking to buy a holster for my XD45 just to use for the steel shoots and, hopefully, IDPA in the future. I was thinking of comp-tac's standard belt holster found here: http://www.comp-tac.com/catalog/product ... ucts_id=66

I know that IWB holsters are infinitely discussable but is there really much to look for in an OWB holster? Any other recommendations?

I like my SERPA. Works just fine for carry, and play. (Not ideal for carry; it doesn't hold the gun quite as close to the body as some others. But certainly acceptable with a decently loose covering garment.)

I carry a Blackhawk serpa as well but I am really fond of the new Safariland ALS (model 6377)that came out. Will be getting one soon.

I looked at both the Serpa and that Safariland model. They both have some kind of lock on them. I don't want that if I am just using it for games do I? I don't foresee myself using an OWB holster any other time, I'm all for concealment ;)

The lock on the Serpa is exactly where you're trigger finger should be pressing on the holster while you're drawing. If I'm carrying OWB it's in a Serpa, but I don't think you can go wrong with anything from Comp-Tac. You may want to take a look at Srigs' line as well.

The Serpa lock is easily removed..............makes it a workable holster then............ :o :P :P

Spend a buck and get a Blade-Tech Holster.

Blade Tech makes some damn Fine Holsters.

I am partial to the Bianchi Carrylock (Model 82) for daily carry but am thinking of getting a Blackhawk CQC (non-serpa) for IDPA. It should add a little speed to the draw.

I am pretty sure I will remain an leather holster guy but for gaming a kydex is a bit faster.

Good Luck

Whatever floats your boat. On the rare occasions that I can make time for IDPA, the idea of using something that I wouldn't carry would be a waste for me; beyond that, I don't have any difficulty concealing an OWB holster at all.

YMMV.

If what you want is a holster without any kind of release/retaining device, there's plenty of options -- including the Blackhawk holster without the SERPA lock.

I agree i have a Blade-Tech Holster for my M&P. It is a nice holsterm and i also have the paddle attachment,
but i really prefer my Desantis holster for carrying outside the waist band, as it holds my gun a lot closer and it is easier to hide wearing just a shirt as a concealment garment.

Yes, there is a lot to look for in OWB holsters. Comp-tac makes a good product and I'll second the recommendations for Blade Tech.

Another popular IDPA holster is the Safariland Model 567. http://www.holsters.com/concealment/holsters/model567.asp

You could just use the holster that came with the XD45, that way you will be able to buy a carry holster for when you aren't competing.

I determined that I have far too many choices.

I just ordered a cheap Blackhawk CQC to use at the steel shoot and at the range a few times. I figure that way I can find out what I like/dislike about it and actually make an informed decision when I buy a nice one.

I used that at the first steel shoot but it puts the gun at a really weird angle pointing into my leg. Slurcspi and chinakay were a bit concerned that I was going to shoot myself
