I think I need a new scope.

Holsters, lights, or any kind of accessory

I think I need a new scope.

And that kind of makes me mad. The last time I was at the range, I had the opportunity to watch my groups go from sub MOA to about 6-8 inches in the blink of an eye. Several other groups were tried, with rounds that have proved to be capable of sub moa over and over again, with the same result.... 6-8 inch groups. The rifle came home with me and all screws were checked on both scope mount and action, everything was secure. I don't feel that the accuracy could have possibly been effected to that extreme by the gunk from the 50 rounds I put through it. I also don't have any recollection of any accidental (or intentional for that matter) dropping etc. that could lead to damage of any kind.

Before I get flooded with the "Stupid noobie just can't shoot" posts that I have grown to know and love, please keep in mind that anyone that has been to the range with me over the last few months can vouch for my accuracy with this rifle. Even my bad groups are moa ;).

Anything I didn't check? I'm hoping I just missed something stupid, and don't need to buy a new scope.

Sorry, but you need to buy a new scope and learn how to shoot.

What brand of scope?

I will get chastised for this, but if it is a Tasco or some other bargain scope, yes you need a new scope. I have seen a few of these fail on hunts, 2 on hunts that the rifle was in a saddle scabbard and one fogged, the other went out of focus, one of the lenses had shifted.

I bought a Ruger in .243 for what I thought was too good of a price on a private sale. I got it home and it wouldn't shoot like I thought it should, more in the 3-4 inch range with what seemed like a floating zero. I removed the scope and found that one of the bases were loose, but the base screws tight. There was a either a damaged thread or gunk in the receiver screw hole for the base and even though the base screw seemed tight, the base wasn't. I cleaned it out the best I could and threaded the base screw in few times, cleaned it again and mounted the bases again, accuracy problem gone.

It's a pretty nice setup, the scope is a Nikon Monarch, so I don't think it's an issue of a POS scope, I'd feel a lot better if it was.

POS ring and mounts? Maybe the screws are getting loose? Scope came out of level?...

I think I could agree with that if the zero changed once, or even periodically. With this, the grouping was a peppering of holes on the target with no rhyme or reason, and all contact points were tight. It could be the rings and mounts, but without loosening up, could it be that drastic of a night and day change all of a sudden?

Have you recently removed the stock? Perhaps Tootsie tried to zero it in with his pipe wrench?

Nope, and I checked to make sure action was secure.

Have you run the scope adjustments all the way out to both extremes a few times and back and then zeroed?

Sometimes there can be binding in the gears of new scopes that can be relieved by running the adjustments through their full range of motion a few times.

Have you checked the rings for alignment?

These can bind your scope as you snug it up.

Do you have a burr or chip on your muzzle?
Decrypt the points of departure and return your head slowly and you do not cancel your hair.

I have not run the scope through the range of adjustment, I can sure give that a try, the others are not an issue.

Not as an attempted remedy to this particular problem, no, I haven't. Thanks for the remarks though, I appreciate it.

Strad, I guess that I didn't mean any disrespect, but you act just like my kids...they know everything and I know nothing - until they get into the sheit......I have laid out several times about checking out a weapon and its components before use....I have even gone into describing for you on this board and in person what and how to get a platform to work correctly, especially checking out the glass for full functionality, reliability, and repeatability.......IF, like sometimes with my kids, I am wasting my time because you know better than I do, that is fine, then I will cease all recommendations and discussions............screw it, go out and have fun...............grumpy out!
