Cheap Stack-On pistol safes at Amazon (sub $50 shipped each)

Hi,

I saw a good deal on Fatwallet this morning and ended up stumbling upon a second safe that I thought was also a good option for someone who is looking to secure a fireram or other misc valuables. These are not fort knox style 200 pound safes, they are not fireproof/waterproof.. they are inexpensive electronic keypad (with a key bypass option and "beep silencing" options) equipped lockboxes sufficent for securing a firearm from children and casual thieves:

Stack-On QAS-1304 Low Profile Quick Access Safe with Electronic Lock ($45, ships free)

Low-long safe with a flip down door, looks like it would also be suitable for secure storage in a vehicle.

Item Dimensions
Weight: 12.2 Pounds
Length: 15.50 inches
Width: 10.50 inches
Height: 5.20 inches

http://www.amazon.com/Stack--QAS-1304-P ... 0013LO0F6/

Stack-On PDS-500 Drawer Safe with Electronic Lock ($40 shipped)

Top-opening "drawer" safe that would likely also work mounted to a wall flat (the 505 model that replaces it is a "wall-drawer" safe..)

Item Dimensions
Weight: 12.8 Pounds
Length: 11.75 inches
Width: 8.63 inches
Height: 4.25 inches

That stack-on one's a good deal. I think that's the one I was checking out on walmart.com awhile back, but it was $48 there, IIRC.

This may be the regular price now as I bought it for this price in March. I wanted to add it to my desk, but this thing isn't as user friendly as I thought.

- The layout of number pad isn't the most intuitive ( I place mine upside down and under stress, I am not sure I would remember that since I don't open this very often)
- Sharp lip. When I reach in and pull out a full sized firearm, my knuckles drag on the sharp edge of the lip.
- Battery power. It relies solely on battery power. I like my Gunvaults because it uses the AC power with the battery backup (I have used this when my power went out).

It opens real nice and stays open with a nice hinge mechanism. Very compact design. Feels solid, but it will not hold off determined intruder.

I assume you're talking about the top "cash register" door style versus the top-opening "drawer' model?

I wondered about the "under stress" ability to operate this but can't imagine it's significantly different than ANY safe or security locking mechanism that requires practice to manipulate under stress. I have a smaller Homak battery operated unit and it has an external 9v battery terminal set to bring the unit to life long enough to punch in a code if you have let the internal batteries expire. I've made a point of test-opening it with my eyes closed a couple times a month (many more when I first got it) and cycling batteries annually, hasn't been a problem and I'm comfortable that I could get it open quietly and under stress if the occasion required it.

Jest checked the price ... on sale fer $38 ... $0.97 shipping ... $3 tax ... it'll be at my house next week! Image

Ya gotta check the reviews on these things ... they're not all created equal ... there's 'nother "drawer" one that's got some purdy horse**** reviews!

The thing with that "side-opener" (above) is ya gotta have clearance fer the door, and to get the gun out!

And even then, I wouldn't put these "top-openers" in a drawer ... 'less it's a REALLY big drawer ... that opens real easy (mine don't :( )

What I got now sets right on top of my nightstand ... once I'm sure this new Stack-On is as good 'er better, it'll replace it, there!

Ordered one of the $39 ones from amazon yesterday afteroon. Looking forward to bolting it to the nightstand sometime next week and then giving a review. I have big ass hands so I really hope it doesn't cut them!

I got this one

http://www.amazon.com/Stack-PDS-500-Dra ... 002KEIU4W/

delivered tonight.

It seems like a fairly solid, substantial safe, especially for the price.

Two modest gripes. In order to expose the keyhole you have to actually PRY off the plastic piece on the faceplate (the part that says STACK ON on it). That gave us pause for more than a few minutes while we tried to determine how best to do that without breaking it. Turns out a butter knife worked pretty well.

The other gripe is the design of the battery compartment. It's like one of those brain-teasers how best to actually INSTALL the four batteries, there isn't enough "room" because there's a little extra plastic piece about 1/3 of the way "down" that goes across where you have to put them. Ugh.

But now I have it figured out, coded (that part at least was really easy) and sitting on the night stand. Glock will go inside once it's mounted. (All that stuff is, handily, included.)
