New Feature: Upload pictures

Postby rucker on Thu Aug 02, 2007 1:21 am

I enabled a new feature now that we are on hosting that can handle it. You can now upload pictures directly to the forum and it will automatically create a thumbnail version of it for you! 8-)

Holy Crap rucker, you've got 2TB of bandwidth a month. Hell GT only uses 1.4, any month that we manage to hit that somebody's got porn on a hidden part of the site.

The only thing we have to worry about on this hosting is CPU usage. We have ridiculous bandwidth but I don't think you could ever hit that with forum software without exceeding the CPU usage limit. That's just a matter of throwing more cash at them and getting server priority though ;)

btw, whats GT? I don't think I'm awake yet this morning...

edit: also if you are interested we have used 534MB in 34 hours

So we're on track to use 11.4 GB / Month at the current rate (yeah, not much to extrapolate from).

If it gets to be a problem, most of us are conditioned to use photobucket or another image host anyhow. It's no big deal.

It won't be for a long long time. If we recruit enough people to get the member count into 4 digits then maybe. I'm sure a lot of people will still use photobucket anyways so they can share with other people without linking to the forum.

Cobbs right. I was talking about GlockTalk. The owner was talking about how much it costs to run the site and said that it used 1.4 TB of bandwidth last month, which seemed shockingly low to some of the sysadmins that are members there.

1.4TB/month is 5% of a 100Mbps line. That would cost me around $100/month (probably a little more, depending on how uniform the usage is). (That's $50 for hosting + $50 for bandwidth. I own the box, do disk, CPU, etc. are free or at least my problem.)
