Word Filter

Postby rucker on Sat Jul 26, 2008 3:16 pm

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the word filter and the rules regarding profanity. The filter converts common words into ****s. If words you type get ****ed out that is fine. What is not ok is trying to bypass the filter by purposely misspelling things or using other forms of over the top profanity.

If the word filter really bothers your sensibilities then this is how you disable it:
-Click on User Control Panel
-Click on Board Preferences
-Click on Edit Display Options
-Set Enable Word Censoring to No

Bypassing the word filter (via misspellings) removes the choice from people who do want profanity filtered. If you don't mind then turn it off.

Is that so horrible? Any other questions?

As far as I know the image has to reside on a server (like Photobucket) and you use the img button above the editing window to insert the url.

There probably is a simpler method but that has worked for me.

Two ways:

Image hosted elsewhere:
Basically its the img tags with the URL of the image between them. Example below.
Code: Select all
[img]http://www.mnguntalk.com/styles/prosilver/imageset/logo-v1.png[/img]

Image uploaded to the forum:
You need to scroll down below the box where you type in your message and look at the stuff in the following picture. Make sure you click the "Add the file" button.

Mike, uploading the image affects your bandwidth, right? All else being equal, I'm assuming you'd rather have images hosted elsewhere? Or maybe you've got gobs of bandwidth and don't really care...

I pay for a fixed speed not the amount of data transferred. The only issue is that I currently only have 256Kb/s (or 32KB/s) so it's sometimes a bit slow if there are several pictures on a page. The bandwidth will be increased in the near future... hopefully :)

Mike, we may want to develop some guidelines for pic size..........some of the pics posted are huge and really could be smaller and still have the desired effect.

I generally try to keep mine to about 300 x 300 pixels ( this being 308 x 352)

That may be a good idea if it becomes a problem, my main issue with large pictures is haveing to scroll around to see them, but given that that is a function of monitor resolution it seems pretty hard to standardize.

Ones they are uploaded to the forum will only display a maximum of 500 pixels wide. If they are larger than that they are automatically resized and you have to click on it for fullsize.

I just add things as I notice them starting to be used more frequently. The goal isn't to make this place church or kindergarten... it's just to maintain at least a minimum level of dignity in discussions and how we present ourselves. I really couldn't care less if every single person turns off the filter for themselves it will, if nothing else, at least maintain a slightly better image for guests who are viewing the forum.

Well, then, this is advance warning that I am offended by every word not in the filter. As a Polish American, I think your bulletin board should be made safer for Poles like myself to come and read stuff without fear of offensive words, statements, thoughts and inklings.
